How much variation do you get out of the bridge and neck pups with them being so close together like that?
Yeah sure, though the top strings on the neck position does have a distinct middle-position "quack". It's still very usable as a neck pickup though, and is far outweighed by the ridiculous fret access you get all the way up to the 27th.

FRs are 14" normally, did he shim the saddles to get to 20" ?

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts when you've got the black dog in there. For me, the AM is absolutely 'it' in my axe, but I do still have a soft spot for the black dog :)

Cheers dude, yeah I was very impressed with the Black Dog when I checked it out in a LP. I actually just got the one for this guitar today so I'll install it next week and do a clip or two.
