Seymour duncan is now making a solderless pickup system.

I think this is a sollution in search for problems.

I think that one of the issues is the terminals. I think that string vibration would make the screws loosen, causing bad contact or perhaps making the wire to slip out. Anyways - my experience with screw terminals is that the wire has to be tip soldered.

We call that 'tinning' wires here in the US, and I agree. Otherwise the wire can oxidize and lose contact over time.

it could be ok, from what i make out they don't lock just by a screw, the screw activates some sort of a clamp... so vibrations may not come into it.. who knows until someone tries one..

also, they may be releasing entire harnesses for certain guitars and pre wired scratch plates.. if it wasn't too expensive i wouldn't be against trying an SG harness in my soon to be new guitar.

I don't think soldering the two cables of the pickups is a big deal. Where many people start to struggle is with more advanced wiring like Parallel/Series and so on. So IMO those pickup frames with the mini switches are real nice. If they'd offer a solution for these integrated in the pot (push/pull), it would make more sense. Otherwise I prefer to be able to chose my own pots and do the 2 minutes of soldering.

But thanks for posting, always interesting to see what's out there.

I like the idea, if only because I'm rubbish at soldering wires to the back of a pot - just can't do it.  Ever.  never works.

Learning to solder properly is a rite of passage and a well soldered joint lasts decades

As well as potential for intermittent connections  that a screwed system can cause I feel that something of the signal is lost compared to a well soldered connection

having installed a set of EMGs recently in a mate's guitar, I can testify to the annoying nature of these screw and clip-on connectors - it was more complex than just soldering the connections and took me twice as long.

I actually like the EMG solderless install i find it a breeze.

but this actually looks quite complex and a lot of faffing.

i was thinking of making something similar to this that you just had to do the initial solder to the pots/switches then you insert the wires for a pickup test guitar which i never even got around to buying lol.

Also i decided it wasn't worth the hassle as it only takes a couple of minutes to install pickups anyway the longest part for me is removing the old pickup from the body and putting the new in the soldering takes no time at all

This looks like a one trick pony to me.

do not like..

in my experience, those connectors they got on the plate are rubbish, and it introduces another set of needless wires into your control cavity, which clots up the whole thing even more (as i'm one of the people that refuse to cut pickup wires), also.. someone needs to solder these onto the pots and ground points, so.. what's the point?
like jonathan said, soldering is a rite of passage and is actually a fun process for me. also, they last forever.
those things wont, especially if you change pickups often, cos the screws get loose ... and if you dont, then what's the point in the first place
