Need new - volume pot / no-load tone post - 5-way - capacitor
« on: December 10, 2010, 03:18:50 PM »
Guitar is a Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Strat, and pick-ups are DiMarzio HS3 / YJM.

I need to replace...

1 volume pot
1 no-load tone pot (I believe only Fender make these, but I dunno...)
1 5-way switch
1 capacitor (I "think" I only need one. I don't know the value I should get for the capacitor though...)

What I need is a place I can buy all this stuff from, and a gameplan... I want to get good quality stuff, as the electronics in the guitar now feel like something straight off a Squire Strat Pack. I just don't want to buy the stuff from 4 different places. I just need some recs on where to go and what to get. Also, not looking to spend something crazy $90 on a pot, but you guys get the picture.

I was wondering if getting a 280k pot for the volume would be a good idea...? Also would like a no-load tone control that bypasses the pot when it's on full to stay true to Yngwie's set up. I will be ditching one tone pot, and wiring all 3 pups to a single tone pot.

I'm a little confused on capacitors... I would like something with a good tone that would give the tone knob a full range smooth sweep. I've heard Hovland capacitors are great, but very unreliable and flimsy.

Tedious questions, I just want to replace everything in the guitar with great electronics.

I think I know what I'm getting as far as the no-load tone (250k Fender), 5-way switch (CRL), and Volume (280k CTS)...

I just need to know what the best rating for the capacitor would be to get. I think the Fender 250k No-Load Tone Pot comes with a capacitor, but I was thinking it might be a good move to put something a little better in there since I'm gutting everything else out. It would be nice to have a more usable tone control.

Dimarzio site has wiring instructions and recommends 500K pots...

This is interesting on capacitors (you need just 1)

I went for this and I'm very happy with the way in interacts with my BKP custom 62's but your Dimarzio's are very different beasts - you will probably need to experiment.

Oh, and throw away the DiMarzio and get some real pickups from Bare Knuckle :D
