My TOP 10 SONGS for 2005
« on: December 27, 2005, 04:35:38 PM »
Aren’t year-end lists the best?! 2005 was a great year for guitar music! Since good taste bars me from listing my own album in the list, here are my top 10 favourite guitar songs from 2005!

In no particular order:

TOP 10 SONGS OF 2005, PART I

10 – LOUDNESS – LET IT GO
Yes, technically, this album came out 20 years ago, but it was re-released in 2005, and is such a great song that I really think it deserves more recognition. Loudness produced not only some of the best melodic metal of the 80s, but they also pioneered speed metal, too.

9 – STEVE VAI – LOTUS FEET
As oxymoronic as it may sound, Vai deserves (even more) credit for his latest album, Real Illusions. I think it’s one of the best technical rock albums of all time. This instrumental has it all: recorded live with an orchestra, you can hear Vai’s melodicism in full force, as well as some downright SCARY arpeggio playing. The piece really takes you to another place … nice stuff!

8 – DEMONS & WIZARDS – DORIAN
I had a really hard time picking a song to include, because the whole album Touched By The Crimson King deserves to be listed. It’s a fantastic metal album, with tons of (uncharacteristic) melodic moments from John Schafer. Hansi’s vocals are top notch, as always. This song has a riff that just gets stuck in your head for hours.

7 – ASTRAL DOORS – BRIDE OF CHRIST
VERY Dio-inspired old school metal that has it all: great arrangements, great singing, and great soloing. This is a very fun song – PLAY IT LOUD!!!

6 – GAMMA RAY – HELL IS THY HOME
Kai Hansen. The man that invented power metal. Respect!

Part II coming soon …

that Vai song lotus feet is extremely intense. it kinda sucks for the first 2 mins or so, but then cracks into one of his greatest - really makes your jaw drop.

:D Yer list time !!! LOL

In no particuler order

Presto Ballet = Piece Among The Ruins
This was infact a Ben tip off !! A great HR album full to bursting with great playing & even better, great songs all with a Prog`ish edge. Personnal fav track " Bring It On"

Pagans Mind = Enigmatic Calling
If you like your metal Power Metal then this is going to be right up your street, think Queensryche. This album is full of great songs from start to finish. Personnal fav track, "Resurrection back in time" go check this album out.

Final Frontier = High Tension Wire
For those of us that like our HR seriously melodic, think Journey, Styx, Leppard. A great album from this Canadian outfit absolutely dripping with catchy hooks !! every tracks a good`un, Personnal Fav track, " Who`s gonna love you know" but i could`ve chosen any of the tracks on this album.

Eric Johnson = Bloom
Another great album from the Texas guitarist. A great mix between easy accesable songs/instrumentals & the more experimental avante garde type stuff. And yes he still has "THAT" sound. Personnal fav track
"Be Good To Me" i just loved the groove !  :P

The Darkness = One Way Ticket.......
A better sounding album than the 1st one & i loved the Queen type vocals. Justin Hawkins gives a much more measured vocal performance & thats all for the better. Personnal fav track "Bald"

UFO = Walk On Water
OK technically not allowed as this was infact released last year 2004, but i only came across this recently. This is the reformed great line up of Schenker, Moog, Raymond, Way, Parker. it includes two rerecordings of 2 classic tracks from UFO`s past. "Doctor Doctor" & "Lights Out" but the rest of the albums great to !! Schenker sounds better than ever. Before there was EVH there was Schenker & this album will show you why. Personnal fav track, " Pushed To The Limit"

Outside mentions for......

Place Vendome = Place Vendome
Features Helloweens vocalist [ i can`t remember his name ] This is a much more commercial sounding outing think Bon Jovi, REO Speed Wagon, great sound not enough catchy hooks for me. Check out the title track as a taster.

Waltham = Waltham
This little lot hail from the East Coast of America, Boston / New Jersey area i think. All of the smart moneys been going on this lot. There music is a real cross bread. The song styles of  the brilliant, The Outfield & Rick Springfield but with a New Punk [ Green Day`ish ] type guitar sounds !! As crazy as that`ll sound espiecially if you no the Outfield / RS this lot pull it of brilliantly. The albums full of great songs except there`s no outstanding hooks !!   nothing you can really walkaway singing which is a great shame, i look forward to there next outing though... check out
"Cheryl [ Come Take A Ride ] " the best track on the album.

That`ll do to be getting on with LOL Oh yer & Ben i remember "Let It Go" the first time round !!!  :P i loved the bit were the SSL desk drops the entire board out except the drums !!  this bit has been copied by every producer since. Great track !!! good choice !!

 :D  8)
God I could do with a Gin & Tonic !

As one of the best guitar songs of 2005?!! I don't think so!!
I have the CD, I like the hooks, but let's face facts - the Hawkins brothers aren't great guitar technicians.

but, to the punter - the man on the street - the gig goer - the album buyer, there is much more to a great album than guitar wizardry. point taken though, it is YOUR top 10 songs of 2005 after all
down from the glens came the marching men...

They pushed the boundries of guitar pop a little further with use of bagpipes, etc. but no, they couldn't sweep-pick their way out of Malmsteen-endorsed paper bag.

Personally I wouldn't want to compile a list of technically-superior guitar tracks as I tend to rate bands more on their compositional skills. Those that combine the two are obviously ideal!

+1 for Gamma Ray.

Hey TO just gotta say a big thank you again. After you gave Demons & Wizards sucha good review I went out and bought their Touched By The Crimson King album. I have to agreewith everything you said, these guys are amazing, the guitar work is excellentand the tone on some of the songs screams BKP MM pickups to me! Plus their cover of The Immigrant Song is outstanding. Thanks again TO!
