Another NGD
« on: December 27, 2010, 06:00:58 PM »

SO this is what my crazy posting has been about...
On my last night shift i was looking at these again, and decided that I'd stop off in liverpool on my way up north to see what i could find... I found a fender blacktop strat in that pale blue colour I've forgotten the name of. I didn't much like the look of it and decided to keep on moving.

I got back to my old village, which has one guitar shop that has a weird range stuff. lots of budget stuff and a couple of rick's and prs'. However... they had a couple of Charvels. Up close I liked the look of the San Dimas 1 over the So Cal. So i decided to have a go.

The action felt a bit high, and it was totally out of tune so i struggled getting it set, due to my unfamiliarity with the floyd.  I was told it had never been played. it isn't back routed so it won't pull up that far. The neck pickup was low output but that has been fixed. probably a bad joint.

I used to think I'd not suit a strat at all. I guess this is no classic strat, but I actually sat down to have a go on this and ended up really really liking it! I have some plans for the kind of tone this should be capable of. This is the first non les paul or sg type guitar I've had since i first started learning to play. It feels very weird, and kind of liberating. This is now my 'go to' guitar for traveling to practices and so on, when a les paul is just that little bit to heavy, and the 333 is that bit too bulky.

I'm very surprised with myself, and quite happy. Going for Nailbombs in this, and I'm going to play around with it more before I decide on what to do with the floyd in terms of stabilizing.

Nice one.

It isn't a "Classic Strat", but it does look kinda classic anyway...

Ooh that's great. I do like Charvels, I used to have one of the EVH ones.  That one, in line with the great man's tastes, had the Floyd flat against the body which I ended up really liking: more sustain, no bending sharp when palm muting, easier tuning and no panics if a string breaks. If you don't need to bend up much it might be worth investigating putting the Floyd flat a la Eddie perhaps?

Nice one! It is a classic in an '80's metal-way. And the white body with the maple neck gives it a modern Jimi-touch  :)  The colour emphasizes the stratshape.

Yeah good call. I need to set the action lower, which will probably be a small nightmare with a floyd. Once it's down it will barely go back. I read that some people put shims in the neck pocket if they decided to lay the floyd flat.

Yeah, its is a classic 80's vibe! the only choices I had were black or white. I preferred the white but I was nervous of it to begin with. I'd like to change the selector knob to a cream style gibson one, rather than the odd diamond kinda one it has. I'll be going for zebra pups for it.

I was looking at getting one of those. Seems like a great guitar for that price.

yeah! and it was at the lower end of the range of prices I've seen for them, which surprised me since I got it from such a small local shop that is really on its own for miles and miles.

I'm waiting to see this pic of your new gitter

You mean cream-black? If yes, would that be classy on a white guitar? On this one, black-red zebra would give the guitar an '80's hotrod-look. Just my taste.

Just a suggestion. Classic zebra's take it to a vintagelook, but with the double hb's and the floyd your Charvel oozess 'so much eighties metal-sphere, that it would tempt me to pick a signalcolour next to black. Would give it the right flavour. But hey, only my opinion.

I would personally go for the solid black no pole piece covers with the guitar having such clean lines it would compliment it really well.

And they dont look too much like emgs as they dont have that greyish plasticy look its a nice matte black or i guess Tim could also do a gloss black too.

I have them in my white RGD

Nice looking Strat head. It's like being back in the early 80s. We fully expect you to start wearing spandex and back combing your hair now you've gone all hair metal on us. ;)
