I think it's worth avoiding the assumption that these people are automatically young. In many cases, especially those folks trolling guitar players on youtube, more so if the guitar players are playing certain types of music, I'd be willing to wager that they people sniping are older, bitter, failed musicians.

That's a point worth making. Chances are the majority of dickheads on youtube are teenagers just due to fact that the majority of youtubers are probably teenagers, but there's plenty of adults out there who are as bad if not worse. In fact thinking about it in all my years using internet forums there's only been a handful of genuine arseholes I've come across and they've all been quite a bit older than me.

They are most likely all ages I don't think to$$ers have particular age group, what they all have in common is a total lack of consideration of peoples feelings! and little or no musical brain.

+1. Another point possibly worth making is that younger people trolling are possibly/probably just doing it for a bit of fun and don't really realise the harm they're doing. The older people doing it don't really have that excuse.

Youtube is a podium for all players, not just pro's. It's a pity so many people comment in a nasty way. Just block them. Then they have some extra time to practice on their ukelele instead of irritating other people.

Its not new and playing the guitar often brings out the worst in some people - I remember going to a guitar show in the 80s when I was about 14.  I was quietly playing on a show guitar and some guy in his early 20s came up to me and said 'I'd give up now mate because you'll never be able to play'.  Now although that guy was right, it cut my teenage ego bad and I pretty much gave up for 20 years after that.  The morale being tell them to $%&# off and get on with doing what you like doing.

Just about any YouTube video on any subject decends into a slanging match these days. There are so many trolls on there it's best to ignore negative posts. Some posters will stick up for the content even if it's not theirs too and give the negative posters an argument.

I have joined a couple of new forums lately, and also made one of my own. Pretty much all of them are sound places, but I guess it might be because they are mostly to do with "niche" interests. You'll find that here we get no trolls, because the only people looking for a place like this are people like us: with something constructive and nice to say. Same with the miniature painting forums I have joined, they're all lovely, friendly folk, and even the arguments never even verge on getting rude, they are always civil to each other and respect where each person is coming from.

It's only really popular sites, like YouTube, Myspace etc where you get trolls, because it's easy to do in those places. The more people signed up to a site, the higher chance there is of a few bad eggs in the mix.

Just do what I do when someone makes a negative comment: laugh at how dull their life must be if they are exerting time and effort into leaving cr@ppy comments about people. It's obvious they are pube-less, socially deficient jizz-dispensers, so why waste the energy on fretting?  :D

Amusingly, one of the best forum arguments I've ever seen was on a miniatures forum, people going bananas about what colour Ragnar Blackmane's hair shpould be

One of the things I've taken to doing on my youTube videos is to make sure I thank anyone who leaves either a nice comment or asks a sensible question. No idea if it deters trolls but perhaps it has a pour encourager les autres effect. I have to admit that the thumbs downs I've received do hurt a bit even though I know it really doesn't matter. My vids can't be that bad can they? :)

I saw a great video ages ago- a black and white video of a teenager playing his "music project" on an acoustic guitar.
It consisted of one note played constantly for about 3 minutes. There may have been about three bends spread throughout the entire piece.
Of course it instantly attracted negative comments, prompting an inspired reply in the video description:
"EDIT: I guess this is a bit too arty for some people."
Setting them off even more.

It is satisfying to troll the trolls.

Couldn't agree more. Furthermore most of the time they are just trying to get a rise out of you, by ignoring them you completely neuter their attempts.

I saw this film a couple of years back, well worth watching - even though it's looking at hecklers at comedy shows and film critics it's all very transferable to music, both in the real and virtual worlds:

I had to look up who Ragnar Blackmane is. A quick google search and a look at some forums showed me that some people build their life around Warcraft.

I think I hate being indecisive.

I've had it before. A particularly scathing one of my 'right hand technique' comes to mind. Unsurprisingly when I asked to see their videos and have some pointers on technique I got nothing in return!

I think you could count yourself lucky, there... they missed a trick :D
