Alright Dave - looks like we have pretty much the same aims! We're just about to clear a load of debt down in prep for bedlam in May. I'll be buying a new car although it isn't one of my dreams and I also need to lose weight - more like 1.5st for me though.

1.5st would work for me too!

Very hard work though - I'm up at 14st 8lbs at the moment. The first stone should be easy, not so sure after that! One more day of bad eating before I go back to work and get into serious healthy mode.
I think I hate being indecisive.

Not so much "resolutions" as "general statements of intent" :)

More physical activity (I'm usually quite active & fit, but 2010 was a very "lazy" year :))
Drink less (at least one "dry" day per week to give my liver a bit of a rest)
Practice guitar more (as opposed to just playing aimlessly)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Ah, but how tall are you?  I'm usually 12.5 stone but I'm only 5'6" so I still look pretty porky.

I've had a bit of a head start, because I've been ill all Christmas so I've eaten a lot less than normal, just about managed most of the main meals but no "snacks" at all and very little alcohol.

Don't want to go to the gym straight away though, because it will be full of fat delusional New Year Resolutioners (....exactly like me  :| ).

Hey Philly, I have been in the same boat. I have been ill for all the Christmas break and am only now beginning to feel better and its back to work tomorrow! But the good thing is that like you, I have lost weight but I have no scales to see how much but my band mates noticed it on New Years Eve ( you look like sh*t mate etc etc).

I was about 22 stone this time 2-3 years ago, now just under 16 and still dropping :) Gym really doesn't work for me, I have to actually enjoy the exercise otherwise I won't do it - so mountain and road biking is what I do. Apparently it's good to build up the leg muscles as well as they're big and will help your body burn more calories at rest.

I've also just decided on another "resolution" - really need to sort out being more sociable and actually learn how to have a proper conversation, actually about to order a book on conversation "skills" as I'm so rubbish at it

As a gym enthusiast I can say do beware of the new years resolution spike.  People go into the gym thinking "I'll lose 10 kg in a month!" then get disheartened when they put on mass or don't seem to lose weight.  They get complacent or completely burned out and stop.  It just takes time and a bit of effort to do these things, and a bit of acquired knowledge on the biology and chemistry of your body. I went from 12 stone to 17 stone but over a 3 year period (I am 188cm tall so it was okay)  every weight training session or roadwork day was kind of rough but having a general goal and smaller ones along the way does help a lot.

1] Phil, I'm 6ft 2" so I can carry about 16 &1/2 to 17 stones and look okay and be healthy - traditional story of what extra I carry is around my middle, unfortunately haven't been around that weight for about 10 years now and my poor old bones can feel the strain of carrying the extra
2] Phil and 38, sorry to hear you were unwell over the festive season, hope you are both well on the way to recovery
3] Tom, your story is really quite inspirational, clearly when you decide to achieve something you can, I wish I had your degree of focus...my twopenneth but conversations that work are almost always about being willing to listen

Yeah well done Tom, I knew you'd lost a lot of weight but I didn't realise it was as much as six stone!  :)  I think you're right that "enjoyable activity" is the best and healthiest way to lose weight, gyms are grim places but I'm really not an outdoorsman....

Good luck with the conversational skills too!  I'm not too good myself but I have improved as I've got older.  Agree with David that listening is a big part, also it's important to relax - don't try too hard or everything starts to feel and sound "forced".  Nothing wrong with a bit of companionable silence sometimes!

Mr 38th - commiserations, it's annoying to have used several holiday days and been sick the whole time isn't it!   But on the other hand it's quite nice not to have the straining trousers and "I need to detox" feeling.

Tom, that was fantastic and I am sure you will carry on and achieve your goal.I went to see a Doctor just before Christmas ( I never normally go near those places but a number of people told me to go saying helpful things like" you have to be careful at your age" ) and whilst talking about exercise, he said that in his opinion, cycling was the best form of exercise as it doesn't strain the joints too much and give a great cardio vascular doodah( stop me if I am getting technical) so I think your choice of cycling makes sense. I ought to do it as I live on the edge of town with a lot of lovely country roads nearby and a forest just 3 minutes walk away. I used to be a competitive swimmer when I was a teenager and I ought to do that.

Thanks for your good wishes David and yours Philly. I can't remember being laid as low as this before and I am pleased at last to say that I am getting better. I had the most awful cough( try singing in  a band when you have a cough!)which is now finally going after 6 weeks. Mrs 38th nagged me and I finally got around to using her patented cough remedy and b*gger me, it seems to be working. An onion soaked overnight in honey and then strained off- you have the onion juice/honey off a spoon whenever you feel the need. Doesn't taste as bad as it sounds and seems to be doing the trick. I wish I'd have done it when Mrs 38th told me to many weeks back but don't tell her that.

another new years resolution that I want to achieve is to use facebook less, I'm really bad with it, on it for at least an hour a day, I should be playing the guitar in that time, however I won't use this forum less, I plan to be on it even more!

it does but it's all photos, everyone on there is a virtual representation of thier real personalities, that makes me feel LESS connected with the world around me, not more connected, they are isolating us not bringing us together lol this could be a whole new subject

true, I tend to use it to get out the house more and stay in contact with folk who don't go out as much, then go the pub with them when they finally come out :D
