Flying V attack ! Massive Vee Gas.

A new quest begun.

I'm missing my old Gibson Flying V but I saw those jackson kv2t and the esp michael ammott one that match my old V specs.

I'm kinda schooled on gibson guitars having owned almost 10 ones in almost every price range (except the very pricey historic reissues) but I'm a total rookie when it comes to high end Esp models and Jackson usa ones.

If some guys like Antag or nolly could school me a bit on those, specially the jackson usa line, it would be nice.

Just want to know if the tone is so special and worth the money. I read that some alder jackson can be hit or miss, same for some esp and so on...

As its a lot of money I prefer some advices except one : I wont go custom even if its in the budget ! :D.

well, I guess the main difference (as I'm sure your aware) is a mahogany set neck on the Gibson, vs a maple neck through on the Jackson. I believe the scale length might also be different (24.75 Gibson vs 25.5 Jackson).

Anyway, the point is they will sound very different, and react to pickup changes in a very different way. Maple neck through guitars love ceramic pickups. Though having said that, I have the strong feeling the Holy Diver would work well on my Jackson RR too.

Proper MIA or MIJ neck through Jacksons are great, they have something like a shallow 'D' neck profile (if that makes sense) which feels weird at first but works out really well.

The Jacksons come in both scale lengths. I forget the particular model name - I think it may be a KV2T - it's the one with 3 a side headstock and no trem. I think it's mahogany as opposed to alder as well.

all the ESP/ LTD amott models I've tried sound great...really resonant mahogany body with jb 59 set, will sound obviously better with bareknuckles....and the amott models have the 24.75 scale length you're used to, my fave was the black or white models with the mirror scratch plate...awesome, would haev been perfection with a floyd. I think ESP/LTD V models seem to be more available in the UK than high end Jackson, tried a RR24 once and it had a nice fast neck but still wouldnt pay over 700 quid for a one pickup guitar. There are some awesome USA jacksons you can see on the canadian musician's friend website or at this place called guitar asylum in new york. If you're looking at the <£1000 budget then I stand by my schecter hellraiser V1-FR, brilliant results equipped with holy divers, painkillers or ceramic nailbombs! They've got 25.5 inch scale length tho, but the upper fret access is unbeatable compared to any ESP or gibson i've played. I've got a high end ESP SV (RR) shape which is worh looking in to, they have slimmer, narrower necks compared to the schecter.

I over estimated your knowledge nolly  :P, more seriously with such acquisitions and all the customs you have, I thought you had tested everything coming out from a factory and could tell me if those usa series were worth their price tags.

As for gwem, I'm well aware of differences but the kv2t is full mahogany so thats why I'm trying to compare them to the esp ninja and gibson flying V. I'd like the most body resonant, rich and full sounding axe but still very tight and focused.

The gibson was meeting those specs but was less modern sounding, massive but still with a rock n roll feel to it, I'd just like a bone crusher for once. I've got enough and had enough 'polite' guitars.  8)

Never knew there were so many mahogany neck Vs out there!!! Thought it was just LPs that had mahogany necks

you seem like a knowledgeable guy, so i was sure you'd looked into this :) (edit: more than me, looks like i was shooting from the hip!)

seriously though: a maple neck (through) will bring extra focus to the sound. i've a few maple necked Vs and have thought that, have a think about it anyway.

Well I tried already some MIJ jacksons, despite the nice neck shape the RR ones were very uncomfy for me, so going blind for a MIA jackson might not be my best gear bet yet.

The gibson is an axe i really like to play but for once I'd wanted to go for something a bit more high end in terms of craftmanship and finish (neck binding, nice hardware and machineheads, block inlays and so on)

Can also add I'm removing my Ninja V interest, the guy won't sell it, he wants more than 1600 € for it, pretty much insane for a used axe he got for less, saw one in a shop but was a bugger, was the ltd model marked as esp on their website.

I guess its gonna be between another gibson or a jackson KV2t, if I'm not falling in love for another les paul.  :lol:

look out for a 1980s Gibson V90 maybe - they have a maple neck, ebony board and 25.5" scale - basically it completely tightens up the sound.

don't forget many white Gibson Vs have an ebony board, which will make them sound a little brighter, as well as play nicer.
