Choice for an ESP Horizon NT-ii??
« on: January 06, 2011, 08:02:51 PM »
I have an ESP Horizon nt-ii loaded with the factory SD JB/'59 passive pickup set. I play though a 6505+ into a Peavey cab reloaded with Eminence Texas Heat/Swamp Thangs. I play primarily in Drop-C tuning. I'm musically interested in Scar Symmetry, Textures, Soilwork...

I'm looking for a high-output pickup that works great in high-gain applications, but will clean up nicely. I want the sheer output of an active, but something less compressed. The factory SD JB is not quite high-gain enough for my style of music, and the 59 (while good for clean and slightly overdriven) is a mess under high-gain soloing situations.

So finally the question! Directed to you guys who have played these pickups out in the real world...
For playing metal with plenty of stop/start, palm muted riffing, what Bare Knuckle would you recommend for both the neck and bridge positions? Alnico or Ceramic?

~Thank you

Something ceramic for those palmmuted chugs.
I think the Miracle Man would fit that guitar very well with its smooth mid range and tight low end. It has the cut like an EMG, but is more organic sounding and if you run it into the Peavey at higher volumes it should put a big grin on your face.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I have a Ceramic Warpig in my NT-ii which is really thick and powerful. For you I'd look at the Aftermath. I don't think you have to worry about the mids all that much. For a maple neck-thru the Horizon isn't all that middy. I think you'll want ceramic. I've had two guitars with JB/59s and felt the same way. The neck is a whole other beast. What kind of tone do you like from your neck pickup?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I response to Lemur...the neck pickup tone I'm looking for is that velvety, liquid tone akin to In Flames solos via the Jester's Race era. That's the best I can quantify...
