Pickup suggestions for high gain player
« on: January 07, 2011, 04:18:54 PM »
I know there are a thousand topics just like this, but I just can't see digging up 6 month old threads to ask for suggestions.

Playing a 1991 Les Paul Studio into a JCM 800 2203, into an 800 cab with Celestion 65's in it.  I use little to no treble in my tone, mids between 6 and 10, and my bass up around 6.  Gain is almost ALWAYS higher than it 'needs' to be, but its just my style.  I bounce back and forth between playing death metal (see: first two Malevolent Creation albums) and heavier hardcore (think: Integrity, but faster, punkier, and with a hint of thrash).  Sometimes a mix of both styles show through in my writing, if that makes any sense.  Just a little background to help make a suggestion.

I'm probably picking up a Fender Jaguar Baritone HH shortly, and will be playing the same style and setup.

Thanks to anyone bored enough to help out.

not using stock.  using a Fat PAF pickup in my LP that I got from Guitar Fetish's site.  Just feels like I could use something with a bit more balls, ya know?

If you want a fat and really huge sound, look at the Warpig. If you like your bass to be super tight, try the Aftermath. Somewhere inbetween those two, you have the Nailbomb that will also serve you well.

Only reason i'm iffy about the Nailbomb it seems like the voicing has a bit more treble than I'm used to.  I'll listen to the samples of it when I'm out of work.  The Warpig was really what I was looking at, I'm just worried that its a bit too over the top.

If you want a dark tone and enjoy masses of gain, I can't imagine you could go wrong with the Warpig.

We have a winner.  And Eric, I'll go with the Ceramic option.
