New Member, 8-string choice?
« on: January 08, 2011, 04:28:26 PM »
Hey everyone :)

I will soon be purchasing an Ibanez RGA8 - after years of playing on drop-tuned 7-strings, it just seems logical so as not to restrict my lead work.  As you probably know, it comes with awful stock PUps, so I'll definitely be changing them as soon as I get it.  I've heard only praise for BKP's, and several of my favourite artists use them, so I ended up on their website and had a look around...

I'm looking for a really heavy 'djenty' tone - the first riff this video almost exactly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=er6_g68rTZE.  From BK's website, it looks like I should go for either the Painkiller or Aftemath - what're the main differences between these?

However, I currently play in a deathcore band (although I'm considereing leaving - too many creative differences).  I don't really want to sacrifice the 'brutality' (for want of a better word) in my tone - would either of those two PUps still get me tones like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0EPpmSHOpc

Finally, I'd also really like a clear, Tosin Abasi-esque clean tone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHuzjbxDyrI

The other pickups I'm considering are the EMG 808X's and the Seymour Duncan Blackouts.  I realise I AM on a BK forum, so any replies I get will probably be a bit biased, but... d'you think I'd be better off going for either of these instead?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!  It's quite hard to make the decision, as you can't really try them out before you buy :/

I have had experience using active and passive pups on extended range instruments and I can say that some of the higher end passives have the same clarity and performance as the active units and have much much better response for clean tones.  I have no idea how Tosin gets the clean tone he does using EMGs might have to do with the Axe Fx and messing with the input gain and eq but that is definitely studio/engineering trickery to get them to sound that way. I am a recent convert to BKPs and have yet to put them in an extended range guitar but I will say they have a very open and dynamic response with extreme clarity when compared to other passive pickups and are typically less compressed than other pickups.  The aftermath, painkiller, and coldsweat seem to be the default choices if you want really clear defined sounds from your guitar for technical things.  I have come to realize when tuning lower you need great highs to balance things out and keep the lows kind of reduced and have maybe a little less output because the low strings get really temperamental.  I used an EMG 707 for a few years and it was just too much output and compression to stay focused, and the cleans left a lot to be desired as I just kept on clipping the input of my amp it did however have good response over the range of the guitar.  Your mileage may vary but I think passive pickups while not the best in all situations do have some advantages over active pickups in the situations you are in.

Thanks for your help :)  I actually tried some 808's today, on a friend's Schecter.  I was incredibly dissapointed, even with the mids maxed it still sounded 'lacking' and thin.  Assuming the Blackouts are similar, I think passives are definitely the way forward for me.  So for a low-end, powerful vildhjarta-like djenty tone, would you say Painkiller or Aftermath?  Or maybe the Warpig?

For those sounds, painkiller.

Painkiller without doubt. It delivers the high resonant peak that will give you that "djenty" attack and voicing.
The Painkiller neck pickup will provide the hollow and bright clean tone you're after as well.

Thanks guys, looks like the vote's unanimous :D  This might me a forbidden subject on here, but... d'you know how the Painkillers compare to the Lundgren M8's (other than price, I know the Lundgrens are pretty extortionate)?  It's just really between these two now...

I'm using an M7 in my custom made ash body/maple set neck/maple fingerboard guitar, and it's my favourite pickup besides a couple of BKP models, but it's not really good at clean tones. The Lundgren M's have moderate output which is great for detuned distorted riffage (the low-end stays clear and articulate even in the drop G tuning I use), but has a somehow weak and thin clean tone with lots of hi-mids (which is also great for distortion, giving an incomparably gritty and agressive character to your sound).

I'd say that the Painkiller is better for cleans (compared strictly to the Lundgren, so I don't want to say anything like it's sounding bad distorted, it's great, but IMHO Lundgren is better), has rich hi-mids similar to the Lundgren M's, but with less top end and more bass, which gives you the "body" the M's lack in a clean setting. For distorted things, I prefer the Lundgren M versus the Painkiller.

I've just bought a used C-Bomb for my custom made 8-string (purpleheart/black walnut body, bolt-on maple neck with wenge fingerboard), I hope it does arrive this week and can give you some info on how does it work in an 8-stringer tuned to drop E. I couldn't really decide whether to choose the Cold Sweat or the C-Bomb, but after some comparison of the sound samples on the new site and reading the diagrams I decided to go for the C-Bomb, because it has less top end and more focused mids, which would be more suitable for my 8-string which has a lot of top-end sparkle because of the purpleheart body and the bolt-on maple neck.

My guitar instructor uses an RGA-8 with Blackouts, and it sounds waaaay better than the EMG's IMHO. But still, a good passive pickup like the BKP Cold Sweat or hopefully the C-Bomb would be even better.

I've not used the painkiller, but my experience with an aftermath in a 6-string baritone in drop A or drop E (E-E-A-D-F#-B) is all very, very good. Prior to the aftermath, I used a miracle man (which is superb, but in a different way!) and a black dog (again, superb, but I sought higher output). I have to say, the cleans of BKPs (especially the black dog and aftermath of the 3 I've got) are truly great.
I'm led to believe (by the very people who told you PK here, amongst others), that the painkiller is a bit more 'djenty' than the aftermath (by a small margin), so that's probably your best bet :)

Just fitted Aftermaths to an RGA8 and they are superb. I'm sure they are Djenty enough and if you fit coil taps and maybe phase switching those Tosin sounds are in there too (if only I could play like him !)
