Bogner Alchemist 212 Combo
« on: January 10, 2011, 07:19:51 AM »
Any experience (good or bad) with this amp?
Tried it out today and thought it sounded awesome in the test room, really punchy gain and nice cleans. Also didnt mind the built in delay.
I put it against the 112 (with a Vintage 30), and thought that was a bit bland.
The dude at the shop also gave me an awesome trade in price for my Fender HRD, so it seems to be a go at the moment, but just checking to see if anyone had any cents to chuck in.
Cheers

There's something weird about the upper mids with the preamp on that one. I had a buddy who owned one and sold it off promptly. A co-worker of mine also got one from Craigslist and didn't keep it longer than a week. Traded it for a Bugera which he's very happy with. Are there other brands at this shop that you can spend some time with for comparison? I think you should at least take your own guitar again and spend an hour or two in there beforehand. If it's for you, then cool. Better safe than sorry.

had the head for a couple weeks
it's a good amp
punchy, versatile and dense sounding
not fizzy at all
could be a bit less gainy in the mids, but it's already clear enough
it could use a presence knob, though, and the built-in effects aren't bad, but are far from flawless
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Do you know the reasons for your mates selling the amp?
There's a few blackstars, a traynor, a peavey and a few marshals at the store and I'm going back today with all my pedals and guitar to give it a proper bash, so we'll see how that turns out.
They've even got bugera, but I've heard some horror stories with regards to their reliability... Which is keeping me away.
Cheers for the input guys

The Bugeras had an issue with Molex connectors arcing over. It has since been fixed in production, but I did have a 333XL from the first run that had this problem and I hardwired the connections. I kept that amp for two years after that and regret selling it. I will buy another one without a doubt. Selling that was a mistake.

The Bogner Alchemist, from what I gathered, just had something in the upper mids that didn't sit right with those two guys. They both said the same thing about it and didn't know each other. My buddy was saying that after playing for awhile, you really started to become aware of a harsh frequency between 1-2Khz and it sounded phasey. I had a listen, could hear what he was talking about, but didn't really want to spend the time with him tinkering with his signal chain to see what could be done or exactly what it was. A few months later my co-worker gets one and he says almost the same thing, couldn't dial it out, the longer I play the more apparent it seems, not getting along with it, feels wrong in the upper mids.

I'm not saying don't get it or it's garbage. I'm just saying give it a real good test, at least as long as you practice regularly. I'd have felt bad if you posted later on with the same problem and I didn't say anything. Hell for all I know it's power related, AC rippling or whatever, and your version might even have a whole different tranny than what they put in them for the U.S.A.

Good stuff about the Bugera, but a shame you got rid of it... Hindsight is a bitch

However, I went to the guitar store today with my gear and spent a good hour fiddling around with the Bogner and loved every sound I could get out of it (which is why it's sitting in my bedroom right now). Didn't pick up on the weird sound though...hopefully it doesn't happen with this one. Cheers for the heads up though.
