Good idea or expensive mistake?
« on: January 14, 2011, 12:12:38 AM »
Hi all.
The most important thing for me in a guitar is a 24" scale lenghth. It's a must.
I'm on the look out for one good quality and versatile guitar I tried a jaguar HH black top. I liked it and the pickups it had.  http://www.fender.com/en-GB/products/blacktop/models.php?prodNo=014830
The Jaguar classic player HH  special has more options that I'm after but with the pickups it has on it, i thought it sounded awefull  http://www.fender.com/en-GB/products/search.php?partno=0141710305
So, I'm thinking of buying the classic player HH special and having a couple of bare knuckle crawlers put on it.
Do you think this is a good idea or could it be a very expensive mistake? It will cost in all nearly a grand.   Any comments welcome.
I try and play classic rock and blues mainly.

I have to say that the idea of a Crawler-loaded Jaguar is something new to me  - but that doesn't make it a bad idea.

The Crawlers are excellent pups for classic rock and blues - well, they are excellent pups for almost anything I tried to play with so far, except possibly rockabilly, surf and metal - and they are supposed to work well with F-like guitars and split well too.

I don't have much experience with Jaguars except for a friend's '63 serie L  and while the pups are a bit of a special thing, unplugged it's a great guitar for blues stuff, quite close to (and better than) my '62 RI Tele. So well, if you do like these HH jaguars with the "hot vintage" labelled stoc pups, Crawler might JustWork for you.

But wait until someone more knowledgeable chimes in, and/or AskTim(tm) before.

Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff

I love the Crawler in my HSS-strat. Big, fat, articulate, singing, balanced. Cleans up great, splits very well. You could listen Mules as an alternative. BKP's are worth the money. The punch, picksensitivity, balance and tonecomplexity are great.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Thanks guys,
I spent quite a bit of time today with the guitar I have in mind. I did a lot of experimenting with the different modes. Now I like this guitar very much. I still prefer the vintage hot alnico pups on the black top HH but, the versitility of the classic player HH and the sounds I got from it today made me decide I'm going to buy it. Maybe be I'll get some Crawlers at a later date.
Mind you hasn't VAT gone up a lot!!!!  Before Christmas this guitar was on offer for £630. Now the cheapest I've found on the net is £680. from a shop in Surrey.
Me thinks a bit of bartering is needed.
Steady as you go ---- Phil
