Blackguard hum....
« on: January 20, 2011, 11:09:16 AM »
Hi - i've installed a set of flat 52's in a MIJ 62 cutom RI tele.........have connected the ground wires correctly to the volume pot as far as i can see, and have run a ground wire from the volume pot to the underside of the bridgeplate but still getting quite a heavy hum (much more than my other single coil guitars)...reduces when i touch the strings etc......is this normal or is there something else i should be trying........thanks.

If you don't touch the strings, it's not grounded.

If the hum is really loud, check the connections, you might need to resolder.

Sometimes it helps to add some ground wires to the negative tip of the jack and into the body if the control cavity is coated with shield paint.

Check that all the ground wires go via the volume pot.  If you don't have a 'star' ground, then you can get more hum that way.  Also if there is more that one way for the ground to get to the jack you can get a ground loop effect.

Thanks guys....i've re soldered the bridge to vol pot ground and it seems fine now......btw......the mij 62 ri had an 8 in a row switch, not 4/4.......it had to be wired neck 1&2     bridge 7&8    3+4+5+6 to the vol pot...........just wiring to tags 1 and 8 got no sound from the middle position......just fyi.
