So I'm modding out my Lefty 2010 Mexican Strat with new pickups as soon as they arrive, and I want to rewire pretty much the whole guitar once I've got it open. I'm pretty sure how I want the controls laid out, but I thought I'd try to get some input and see if anyone more experienced in electronics could help me plan and maybe draw up / point me towards a diagram!
Here's my proposed layout:
5-Way selector stays stock.
The top volume knob placement bugs me as a long-time Jazzmaster player, so I want to change that into a switch (to be discussed later). The other two pots will become a master volume and master tone. I don't really feel the need to use a greasebucket or treble bleed mod on that, but suggestions are welcome if anyone wants to argue for them. I would also love some input on capacitors; is .022 uf the best value for texas style strat pickups and is it worth going up to a nice tin/aluminum in wax capacitor vs. Vitamin Q or Orange Drop?
Here's where it gets interesting: I propose replacing the top pot with a 3-way switch. (First I'd want to know what switch I could fit with as little modifying the pickguard as possible.) I have a couple ideas for switch positions.
Positions (A):
1. Bridge on in series. (Great warm humbucking sounds with neck supposedly, volume boost when combined with Neck and Middle on the 5-way.)
2. All settings stock.
3. Killswitch. (Not as necessary on a Strat, but I used one on my Jazzmaster to keep it quiet when necessary, a great tool for on stage.)
or
Positions (B):
1. "
2. "
3. Bridge on out-of-phase. Would get some cool sounds, but only worthwhile combined with the neck pup, or so I've heard.
Any other position suggestions? Pros/cons? Completely different mods that I haven't though of? All input is greatly appreciated. :D
