BKP pup recommendation
« on: February 09, 2011, 04:27:42 PM »
Hey everyone, this is my first post and of course, it's a recommendation post.  I know you guys love 'em!

Anyways, I'm looking to buy some new pups for my guitar and thought I'd see what you guys recommend.

My guitar:
1997 Schecter Hollywood Classic custom shop
I believe the body is ash
Flamed maple top
Birds eye maple neck
Rosewood finger board

Current pups I believe are SD-1 and SD-4 with coil taps.

Current amp is Egnater Renegade.

I play classic rock, hard rock, alternative, blues and occasionally some 80's metal (mostly blues and classic rock). I love big, beefy tone that's thick and not muddy. I play both rhythm and lead so versatility is a must. Finally, I need pups that sound fantastic when split via coil taps.

I spoke with Tim about this and he recommends the Nailbombs as they are BKP's most versatile pup and their number 1 selling pup, but I'm a little worried about them being too hot for what I need.  Is there anyone out there that uses nailbombs for classic rock and blues?

Thanks in advance!

I know, I read that but I'd like to hear feed back from people who've used nailbombs in rock/blues applications as well. I just want to make sure I'm getting the right pup!

if you want something less hot, the holy diver and crawler will do the job too

I would prefer HDs or Crawlers for what you want!

Trying to find bluesy/classic rock clips of nailbombs hasn't been easy. I'm finding mostly metal clips. I haven't checked out the HD or crawler yet...

How does the Abraxas sound for blues/rock and coil splitting? Seems to be an underdog compared to other pups.

Can't tell about the NB or Abraxas, but I think the Crawlers might fit your bill. They really shine in a bright guitar, being thick, warm, yet still sharp and punchy, and really versatile. I've heard they split really well too (not tested yet but it's on my todo list). Kind of PAF on steroids, hot stuff with still a very vintage vibe.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

The Crawler is balanced, round, with a fat midrange and an not too bright topend. Tonally it's like a hot PAF. The Abraxas is a hotrodded Mule, which can be great for your style.

I got a bridge Nailbomb in a LP copy (mahogany body + neck, flame maple top and rosewood board) and it's able to pull off some great hard rock and alternative tones. It can do blues and classic rock as well, but it always keeps its modern tone - at least to my ears.

I would go for something less modern like the Crawler or the Abraxas (haven't tried any of the two though so based on what I've read). Forum member HTH have made some great clips of the Abraxas in his LP.
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)

Tim made the same suggestion to me and I was going from Blues to fairly modern Metal. I did also ask another well-informed source a while ago but I can't recall who it was off the top of my head and they said Holy Diver instead. I get the impression that if you want a BKP to do pretty much anything then it's the Nailbomb you call on so I guess it's ideal if you play a range of styles.

Based on the surprising personal message I've just received it seems my contributions to this forum are not welcome. It was not my intention to upset anyone and I apologise if anything I've ever posted has been confusing. This is the first time I've had such a response on this forum but it will be the last. Au Revoir and thanks for all the help and support I've received over the years.
