Can Anyone Enlighten Me
« on: February 13, 2011, 01:07:42 PM »
Me being an old school rocker brought up on ya Free's,Zeppelin's etc it seems im way behind the terminology if that's the right word so if someone could tell me what Djent is I would be most grateful. I imagine it is a type of music? Appeals to the younger masses or any old boys who may know of this

If im correct it is actually a term to describe the palm muting sound that is used in a lot of modern metal but it seems to have expanded into being a genre

look up icarus lives on youtube for a basic example (and the most listenable in my opinion)

pretty much what tony says

it was a word used to describe a certain type of tone (most notably meshuggah) and then it turned into a genre

Aye, you want to prevent yourself from referring to Djent as a "genre" or even a sub-genre of metal, as a lot of people make that fatal mistake, heh. "Djent" is just the sound of a particular guitar tone associated with newer prog / tech / math metal bands like Periphery, Tesseract, Meshuggah, Chimp Spanner and Animals as Leaders.
I really hope it doesn't turn into a name for a genre itself, as I have heard such a diverse array of bands using that sound and from one end of the spectrum to the other, they are all so drastically different from each other that using that term to describe them would get really confusing. I prefer to use the term "prog metal in the vein of Periphery / Meshuggah / Chimp Spanner" (delete as appropriate)

YouTube any of the above bands, or type Djent into Last.FM to get a good idea of the kind of bands that use this sound. I for one absolutely LOVE it, it's just such a meaty, organic kind of tone....which is strange as a lot of these bands use amp modelers to achieve it, heh. A lot of factors go into creating that ultimate Djent tone, I think. Like the construction of the guitars, the woods and the scale length. If you can get the guitar to do most of the work for you in those areas, then dialling in a decent tone on the amp and actually making the sound becomes a lot easier.

Our very own Nolly would be a good person to advise on how to get a good Djent sound, he is very much into the scene and his own band Red Seas Fire use it really, really well!

This one from Meshuggah would be a good example too, you can really hear the tone from the single notes quite clearly.

I don't think modern meshuggah is that djenty, it doesn't make me go "djent djent djent djent" out loud ;)

Tosin is quite into his Jazz (as you can probably hear) so I think his dress sense stems from that kind of style.

But just goes to show, the way a person dresses shouldn't dictate what kind of music they are into.  :D

As an aside, i always think the Djent sound could be described as sounding like a sampled instrument than a guitar. It certainly has that kind of timbre. I certainly wouldn't describe it as organic. More synthesized and sterile to my ear. Math metal leaves me a bit cold i suppose. It sounds like music made on a computer which i suppose is the point.
