Custom 62 - are these the 59 Slab Board set ?
« on: February 16, 2011, 09:05:47 PM »
I've been searching the forum for info re Mother's MIlk and Apache and cane across references to a Custom 62 set that weren't on the website - they sound suitable for a solid Maple neck/fretboard  (no rosewood) - I also saw a coupl of threads that said these were now called the 59 Slab board set, but the shop does not mention maple suitability.

Can anyone confirm ?

Cheers

Given the 59 slab board is very similar to the specs of actual 1957-1958 strat pickups, I would say that they are the ones to go for for maple boards if you want an Alnico V pickup.
BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

Many thanks - that's just what I wanted to hear  :)

I like the quality of the ITs I have, but have found myself playing "cleaner" as the years go by - still rough around the edges though (Tweed/Bassman territory) , and the ITs do lack a certain trebly component (see my other thread).

I was nearly resignng myself to also getting a rosewood neck as well !

Note that the Slab board set is the brighter one of the two 'patend pending' sets. They indeed seem  to be the '62 set, which I have in an alder bodied, maple+rosewood strat. A THICK rosewood board.

What is the body wood on your strat? With a maple board, I might go for the veneer set, out of those two..and wouldn't rule out the other brighter strat sets.

I would e-mail Tim with some good tone references though  :)

Thanks again:

I have a modern Alder bodied Standard American strat (9.5 radius, medium jumbo frets).

As is probably usual, I was considering the Apaches, then went on to the Mother's Milk idea from the reference   tones on this thread by HJM (fantastic samples by the way!) and by listenng to the samples on the BK website:

http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1625.0

I also saw Nolly had this to say on the MM vs Custom 62 thread:

"The '59s are actually have a brighter top end than the Apaches you currently have - with their A3 magnets the Apaches are smoother than you might expect given their wind. The '63s are a little smoother than the '59s but still brighter than the Apaches. Both do have a significantly woodier sound though. The Mother's Milks sit somewhere between the two, with a fatter low end than the '59 but a brighter top than the '63s.

As far as woodiness goes, any of those three would deliver in spades. Yes, they're brighter than the Apaches, but I'd wager with the reduced mid they would sound less "hard" when you dig in. "

This sort of explains what I am after - brighter than Apaches (and def the ITs), woody etc  so I agree the 63 set should give me more top end, whereas the 59 set would be too much given I have the alder/maple/maple combination ?

Just to clarify, do you mean actually mail Tim some mp3's ? It would make sense ! If so I'll have to get my thinking hat on re what setup to record - any advice re what "reference" would mean in this case ?

What I have done is that I've given is a like song name (e.g. Gary Moore's cover of Wishing well), and maybe a link to youtube or something.

BUT. Be sure to mention in detail what you would like to change on the guitars tone with the IT's installed! Tim knows his pickups, and would most certainly be able to give info on what pickups to replace them with.

Ok with you now.  :D

I know you said to mail Tim, but I thought I would put these in this thread to start with.

Well as a starter for cleanish stuff, there is the youtube reference cited by Southpaw:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiqW5cTCxlw&feature=fvst

and Southpaw's Custom 62's (59 Slabboard really)

@Southpaw, if you are around - just checking, does your American Strat have a veneer Rosewood on a Maple neck ?

Thanks again.
