Madsakre's tip will make it sound even bassier  :?
tighter maybe, but a lot bassier

Okay, well my ears disagree :P Well, you're probably right, but bass can always be reduced on the amp :)

No 1st hand experience just from clips and videos it seems to me that the Miracle Man sounds like a deeper Lundgren M6. Just a thought.

Doesn't sound like the OP wants to go for the Miracle Man, and upping string gauges will yield a darker and muddier tone.
Josh: I'd recommend trying out the Aftermath - it won't be as hot and compressed as the C-pig you're used to, but with three large ceramic magnets it is still going to give you plenty of output as well as more or less nailing the differences in voicing you're after.

How the? This makes no sense to me. the more tension i have in my strings, the more clarity and power. Its the direct opposite of what you claim. But well, nothing new in brits reversing everything :P Just look at your cars xD

Greater string mass will yield higher output from the pickup, lowering the resonant peak. The increased amount of low end, combined with the heavier strings having more momentum makes it more difficult to get clean dead stops when playing staccato passages.

If you want higher tension without this happening, the solution is to increase the scale length, though that will change the fundamental timbre of the instrument.

Britain 1 - USA 0

Clearly there's nothing new in Americans thinking they're right but actually being wrong  :D

All good fun but the important thing is that you find the right pickup for you and it sounds like the Aftermath is indeed what you're after.

this

I spent years playing .052+ low E strings in quite bass heavy les pauls, and when I tried near standard strings again, the tone improvement was enormous
unhappily, I can't go back too much, since a low .046 string won't hold a drop C# tuning, but it does SOUND tighter and clearer, despite of the string itself being looser
the .052 I use sounds A LOT more boomy, although the string tension is fine

getting the screws too close can also make the bass boomy and distorted

thanks for the recommendations guys.
Nolly, what you said sounds absolutely spot on to me.
I have been comparing clips of C-bombs and aftermaths and i do much prefer what seems to be happening in the highs and lows of the aftermath, it seems a little crisper and the lows seem to be more controlled but that's just my ears based off clips.
I will order some Aftermaths in the next few days and i guess if they aren't for me I can always swap them out for something else

i'm posting the less scientific comment EVER, but i swapped .56s for .59s in my B tuned guitars and they FEEL better now... they can sound looser (i didn't notice but i believe you), but help to tighten my playing, and usually my hands are the loosest things in the chain! :P
