new MASSIVE pickup shootout!
« on: February 28, 2011, 12:19:05 PM »
yes, another shootout! :)
everything's recorded with a PODxt and compressed, so the various chunks sound much more similar than in real life, but the difference is definitely there and i can hear it...

playing is - ehm - quite terrible.

guitars involved:

Gibson LP Studio (b: C-WP - n: MQ)
Gibson LP Studio (b: Pig90 - n: Stockholm)
Gibson SG61 (b-n: CS)
USM Hornet (b-n: RY)
Ibz SA2020 (b-n: A-NB)
Ibz S470 (b: C-NB - m: Trilogy - n: PK)
Ibz RGR321 (b-n: A-WP) (NOTE: this guitar is tuned in B, so - even if riffs are in E the low B added resonance can bias the "test")
Ibz RGR08 (b: SD Blackout)

neck (and middle) clean tone

the worst tones here are the CWP (maybe...) and, light years behind, the Blackout - that simply hasn't got cleans (and without audio compression sounds even worse, in the sense that the uncompressed sound is almost exactly the same!).

again, the worst of the pack (at least in my opinion) is the Blackout (of course the ceramic Pig climbs up the chart in this test!)... easy to play, easy to mix, but very, VERY compressed and (excuse the abused word) MONODIMENSIONAL. it seems to live in a tight tunnel of mid frequencies, with much less bass than it should be supposed to have, and no highs to speak of...

these are just a part of my pickup "collection"... it's a long and not very interesting argument, but basically i live in two different places, so i've got some guitar in one and some in the other one... this was the first turn ;)

negligible difference in the metal demos between all of them, the POD has to go doc!
c-bomb bridge, cs neck, HD set, MM set, PK set, Alnico BH set

yeah, i know... actually i hear quite definite differences while i'm playing or recording, but they are almost completely levelled when i save audio in mp3 format... anyway there's no other realistic way i can play and record at home, so i fear it will stay... :)
not that the official axe-fx powered BKP samples differ all that much...
