In preparation for my rifftracker, ive decided to create a few piece ideas before it comes. Now ive had a shot at clean, peaceful pieces and so far so good, but when it comes to metal im stumped. Everything i do sounds pop-rock. I need a few pointers on where to go and what to do.

Down/alt pickup palm mutes with powerchords/fifths and legato in minor keys.

if you're playing in E (minor), throw in a shedload of F5 (minor second) and Bb5 (flat fifth) powerchords- and lots of palm-muted root notes in-between the power chords.

If that doesn't sound metal, i don't know what will.

Listen to some great riffers for inspiration... Pantera, Rammstein, Sepultura, Soulfly.

Paint yourself and your guitar matt black and grow a really silly beard (one of the things that looks like a paintbrush stuck to your chin).

Listen to Dokken anything in the george lynch era and you will find loads of inspiriation.

Scoop some mids, palm mute, hold the pick with three fingers at a shallow angle. it ads to the sound if your finger nails touch the strings first. Dig in to the strings agressively.

Go forth unto a guitar tab site and scope a few Iommi riffs to play along with the record. From this all metal flows -- OK, that's an over simplification :) but however you tweak your amp, or however fast or slow you play it, that stuff is gonna sound pretty much like metal of one kind or another!

But, yeah, just keep playing whatever you feel like playing. In the end, your vibe, your arrangement, will be what ends up making music sound like what you want it to sound like. You could arrange and play Britney's "Oops" to sound pretty effin' metal if you wanted! :twisted:

I agree.

The only way you'll understand how to play a genre is to familiarise yourself with it to the point where you can think in that style without having to think about it.. if you know what I mean :lol:

Liaten to any decent metal album you can get your hands on, try and replicate what their doing, then try and come up with your own ideas using those techniques.

I also find being in the right mood helps me write riffs, try thinking about something that gets you completely pissed off for about half an hour, then express that on your guitar.

Do what comes natural, don't force it.
maybe pop/rock is where you should be focussing,

but a copy of the first 4 sabbath albums would get you started
