Pickups for a Mayones Setius GTM 6 (custom guitar from Poland)

Hello!

I'm planning on ordering a Setius GTM 6 from Mayones.

As you can see its a Mahogny Body guitar with rosewood fretboard and Bolt-on neck.

I'm going to use it for mostly hot rodded 80's sound, and upwards towards Thrash metal.

I'm struggeling to decide what pickups to put in it. I have a calibrated set of Painkillers in my other guitar, but i think it will be too "in your face" as we have moved away from the more heavy metal stuff.

The guitar will be mostly used for riffing and some leadtones.

My question is, would a Cold Sweat neck / Nailbomb bridge combo or calibrated Holy Diver set work?

I have a Setius right next to me, and find it to be a very dark guitar - I'd recommend trying a brighter and leaner pickup such as the Rebel Yell in the bridge for a balanced sound that retains the guitar's natural deep timbre. The Rebel Yell is capable of everything from sweet vintage tones to all-out metal brutality with it's combination of classic open midrange voicing, lean and tight low end and enough output for any application.
A Cold Sweat would certainly work well in the neck for a modern vibe, though I personally find the VHII neck to be an even more versatile choice that matches up with the Rebel Yell bridge very nicely.

Rebel yell seems nice aswell. But VHII wouldn't just be good for more vintage stuff? Is it versitile up towards more metalish stuff aswell?

I also want pickups that can stand out in the mix, I dont want to be just some background noise while playing with a band.

Also, may i ask what pups you have in your setius?

Yes, I can confirm the VHII is more than capable of metal. I play in a modern progressive metal band and use the Rebel Yell/VHII combination in several of my guitars, in both 6- and 7- string formats. I find them to be extremely good at cutting through both live and recorded mixes.

The Setius doesn't belong to me, it's fitted with DiMarzio Evolutions (which I'm not a fan of at all!)

I agree, i dont want either SD's or DiMarzio's ... (or EMG's for that matter) that they normally deliver the guitar with.

The dealer that im talking with here in Norway, also deals BKP's so he just orders them and BKP sends the pups to Mayones.

But im gonna seriously consider the rebel yell and VHII combo. Thanks a bunch!

What kind of pickup covers are those? Those are not original BKP ones?

Yep, they are the "black, no polepiece holes" covers that BKP do!

Those black ones look freaking awesome. Does it affect the sound in any way not having the poles "in the open" like that?

Arguably yes, but we are talking about a very minor difference that would require a controlled direct comparison test to yield audible results that could be attributed solely to the covers... In practise, I wouldn't worry about it!

But over to a more practical matter. In the BKP shop i cannot find the option for a "no polehole" version of the black covered humbuckers. Do you just have to specify it in the mail when you order it that you want without poleholes ?

Nolly played all the BKP's for the clips and he knows what he's talking about. Besides that, I think too many people think you can't play metal with vintagehot-pu's. If you have a highgainamp don't worry, even Mules get you there.

One last thing. I've noticed people writing that they've had problems with "flaking" on the black pickup covers?

It seems that you have some flakes aswell on one of you guitars. Is this a huge problem, and is it just on the black ones?

Yes, the black covers can be scratched through to the nickel underneath by metal-on-metal contact. The damage on mine was done over the course of a 3 week tour from the impact of the strings hitting the covers when picking hard. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a viable alternative to the car etching primer BKP currently use. You could of course order the covers with the battleworn finish option so that any further damage wouldn't be noticeable!
