Identifying type of Bare Knuckle pickup
« on: March 10, 2011, 09:30:28 PM »
So, there is a guy selling some of these but he says he doesn't know what model they are.  I asked if it said anything on the back of them and he said only 'Bare Knuckle pickups hand wound in the uk'.

Surely there has to be a way to see from the pickup itself what type it is?

Cheers,
Andy

the best way is to hook it up to a multimeter and check the DC rating and then you have a lot more chance of narrowing it down

try reading the dc resistance and check the magnet sides colour and thickness

If it's cheap you should probably go for it - most Bareknuckles are definitely worth having!

I saw those - they're double creams.  Based on that, I'd say they're Stormies or Mules...

If we are talking about the set twin fan mentioned I think they're from the vintage department as well as they have 2 conductor wiring. All the higher gain models (normally) have 4 conductor wiring, right?

Everything's available as an option, but the fact they're double creams with two conductor wiring screams PAF...

No guarantee of anything as BKP offer all the options on all the models

the only way is to get a DC resistance reading and try to interpret what is what
They could be vintage , but they could be nailbombs

It would be good if Tim had a page listing DC resistances  in ascending order with a guide to what the pickup could be

Or if he'd put stickers with PU types on the backplate?

I usually write on the back plate with permanent pen, otherwise I mix them up, too many BKPs flying around in my house.

I have mentioned it to Tim a number of times
If you only have one BKP from NEW then not a problem - but further down the line it can be an issue

And if you keep swapping them and include some prototype and custom sets which come in plain boxes, then it's easy to get into trouble (my last custom set were sort of AII Mother's Milks with formvar wire).  I was trying to tell GwEm what I had in some strats and I know I got one wrong!

Labeling the pickups seems like a really good idea. Both model and position  :D

Not a problem for me so far, but might be in the future.
