Something else made in Devon
« on: March 11, 2011, 04:45:48 PM »
My Brook Lyn 00 12 fret acoustic. £1900 (£1700 when I got it), but it will compete easily with Collings and Huss & Daltons at £x2. In fact I went to the shop to buy a Collings but....

The Lyn is a wonderful guitar. I bought mine in the early days of the company (so mine was £1300 about 7 or 8 years ago) and I've honestly not played a better acoustic before or since. If you're more of a finger style player than a strummer I can't think of a nicer guitar, especially for the money. I'm very partial to a bit of John Renbourn and Bert Jansch and the Lyn really does cover that ground well even if my hands can't. :)

Strings wise I've found that the Elixir Polyweb sound really nice on mine. I tried the Nano web but they sounded a little too bright to my ears whereas the Polywebs had a lovely warm, full, balanced sound across the strings.

When I bought mine I tried every 12 fret 00 style guitar between £600 and £3000 and the Brook, to my ears, beat the lot hands down.

I still haven't worked out where it plugs into the amp yet though...

Quite a coincidence you having one too, they're not exactly common. Quite apart from the sound and construction quality isn't the neck amazing?
What woods did you go for? And yes I should have pounced when they were £1275. Strings wise I use Newtones.

Not sure which woods are used exactly as I didn't buy it direct from Brook but instead I got it from Ivor Mairant's on Rathbone Place. Mine's the no frills version which suits me down to the ground.

If you're within a drive of Dorset you'd be most welcome to try it. I'm glad to hear you're into the mighty John Martyn. I've been listening to him since the seventies. Here's one of my many favourites by him. Small Hours, recorded beside a lake at 2.30 in the morning, you can hear the geese kicking off and the icing on the cake is Steve Winwood doing my fvourite ever synth solo.

Cocaine by John Martyn is one of my favorite tracks ever, perhaps the favorite.

Choucas - I was supposed to be in Devon (New Forest) last summer.  Not for the horses, more for the cold Badgers

Ah yes Badger Breweries. Tell you what though Ringwood brewery is right on the edge of the New Forest and their beer is brilliant. They've got best at 3.8, 49er at 4.9 and if you're feeling brave Old Thumper at 5.6. A night on Thumper is akin to being hit by a train. Lovely.

I'm rather well versed on Ringwood too

I've got an M&S Winter Beer on the go at the minute..... then I have a Badger funnily enough.

Sorry about the hijack.
