Cheapo 7-string pups?
« on: March 13, 2011, 02:16:09 PM »
Going to blaspheme a bit here... I need to swap out a 7 string bridge pup as I think mine is fubar, but I don't want to go buying a decent bit of kit just for testing purposes, as if it turns out it's another component that has gone, I'm out of pocket for something I didn't need (yet).

Iron Gear don't do 7 string pups yet, although they want to in the future, so does anyone know of any other cheap 7 string pups out there? I tried ebay and all that is on there at the mo are good quality / expensive ones.

Alternatively, does anyone here have a 7 string bridge pup laying around that they are not using that I could borrow for a couple of weeks? I'd be willing to cover postage.

[Edit] The hotter the better, btw. I am trying to see if I can get a half-decent djent tone out of the 7 string. If I can, then I will invest in a Painkiller bridge pup for it, but not before I find out it can do what I want it to.
Have seen a pair of 7 string buckers on ebay for £25, but I don't know if they will be "hot" enough at that price, they would probably be like stock bottom end pups.

Kent Armstrong do a cheaper 7 string humbucker. I hear good things about them too. You can get them from wdmusic.co.uk

It's a name I know too, thanks for that! I might have to grab one for myself.   :)

+1 for kent armstrong, and for dealing with WD as well; good pickups, they hit well above their prices, and WD are a solid company to deal with.

Yeah I reckon I'm going to grab me one now actually... (credit cards out hehe....but this is the last time I use it!)

[Edit]
You know what? Bugger it. If I get a PK later on, this Kent will be hanging around doing nothing, and I really want to build a 7 string at some point. If this Jackson doesn't do what I want, I'll start building my home-brew earlier than expected, and I was going to put a PK in that anyway. So I just ordered a PK, no point beating around the bush.

Multimeters are dead cheap.  Think mine came from Aldi.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Oo, actually I think I have one of those somewhere... just need to learn how to use it, hah! Any idea what numbers on the little thing with the dial I should be looking for?

I go through the reistance settings (low to high) until I get a reading.  This BTW, is definately the wrong way to do things.
