Pickups for a Gibson LP custom. Riff Raffs?
« on: March 21, 2011, 05:11:32 PM »
I just purchased a Gibson Les Paul Custom with the 490R & 498T pickups.  I have never really been fond of these pickups on a Les Paul.  The 498t sounds too bright to mix with the 490r which I think it too bass heavy.  Especially on the low E and A strings.  It gives it a muddy sound.  What would be a good set of pickups to put in this guitar.  I currently have the pickups from my PRS in my Les Paul (57/08 - copies of the 57 classic).  I like the sounds but it needs a little more punch.

I play in a cover band that plays some Hair Band music, and some heavy metal(Guns&Roses, Van Halen, Seether, Ozzy, sick puppies, Rage Against, Korn)  .  I also play in another band that has more of a blues/classic rock feel (Stevie Ray, Eric Clapton, Albert King, Ac/Dc, Led Zeppelin).  I have the PRS all set for the Heavy Metal but I am looking for a pickup set that will work good in the Les Paul and possibly work for both bands

I bet the riff raff would be awesome, but it is a VERY bright pickup (not thin at all, but BRIGHT)
if that's what you need, go for it
it's the most open sounding bridge pickup I've heard

I believe the black dog and VHII are good candidates too, for a bit more output and less treble sparkle
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Les Paul Customs tend to be bright in the bridge but a bit dark on the neck pickup. Hence I would look for a warm bridge pickup and a brighter neck pickup. So my recommendation would be a Black Dog bridge and a VHII neck.

Cheers Stephan
