Nailbomb Question
« on: March 25, 2011, 12:35:46 PM »
Firstly, Hi all!

I'm getting a set of nailbombs for an Ibanez RGA42 - but i want to make sure i'm ordering right.

Whats the difference between 2 and 4 conductor?

And the spacing will be standard, right?

Thanks in advance.

is that the one with the active EQ & pickups - have you thought about what you are doing with the switches?

Humbuckers contain 2 coils, each coil has 2 wires coming from it.  On a 2 conductor humbucker the coils are connected inside the pickup so the humbucker can only be used in traditional series humbucker mode

4 conductor pickups have all the connections at the control cavity end - which allows you to wire the humbucker in various different ways such as coil split, parallel or play with the phase.   tahts why i ask what you are doing with the controls, as personally i would ditch the EQ and put something useful in its spot

If in doubt get 4 conductor!

not entirely sure of the spacing of the Gibraltar bridge - but i reckon it will be wide spaced you want

Hey Wez,

Thanks for reply, yeah, you're right, has EMG 'style' active p/ups and the EQ switch, which i am not too bothered about losing, I would probably replace it with a more traditional tone pot.

Again, what would be best? 250k or 500k pot?

I wouldn't be too interested in coil tapping / phasing either (This guitar is going to be a straight full-on metal one trick pony), so i reckon the 2 conductor is the way to go.

Can anybody help on the spacing?

Rightly again, as Wez has said, its the standard Ibanez Gibraltor fixed bridge.

I should probably point out that this will be running into a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rec with an Engl cab cross loaded with 2xV60 and 2xV30's and i'm drop tuning to A, (13-64 gauge strings) so i really am going after a 'djent' tone.

Think Sikth (who i beleive are endorsed by BK) / Fell Silent / Monuments etc and you're on the right track.

I have looked around, and the Nailbombs seem to be the one, unless any of you gentlemen have any other ideas?

Again, thanks in advance!

If you have a trem bridge go for the 53mm spacing. Also if you have a fixed bridge but the pickup is very close to the bridge. If in doubt, measure.

Cheers Stephan
