Ibanez RG470S 93' which PUs for weak mid rande axe?
« on: March 31, 2011, 01:28:52 PM »
Hi everyone
Really need your help. I have Japanese RG470S bought in 1993. The axe is pretty scooped in the mids and tends to lose in mix with its Dimarzio Super Distortion in bridge. However Dimarzio The Breed in neck position pretty suits me. What would your advise which pickup will boost mids (especially low/mid mids) being still a good pair for The Breed outputwise? And which PU for the middle position is good for them (looking for strat like tone)?   Thank you and sorry for my russian-english  :).

is it the trem that sucks out the tone? in that case, i have a jackson fusion pro, which is also basswood. Its trem sucked out all the attack and midrange too. I blocked the trem and installed a Bill Lawrence 500xl. That did the trick

Holydiver would nail the tone. I don't know how powerful the Breed neck is but you can always lower the pickup height.

The standard HSS set offerings pair the Irish Tour with the Holydiver so I guess that should work well.

Thank you and sorry for my russian-english  :).

No problem, your English is fine.

Cheers Stephan

what type of music do you play?

I play kinda mix of Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Metallica, Nickelback, Dream Theatre. Sometimes in D tuning but not lower.

Perhaps yes, the trem is main tone sucker, but I can't block it cause I heavily use it.

A Nailbomb or Holydiver should suit you and the neck Breed well?

Holy Diver seems ok. But thinking of Aftermath as well. What do you think?

Holy Diver. The Aftermath is very tight, but has a decent amount of mids, several users stated.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

the holy diver and aftermath have a very similar eq curve and amount of mids, but the output and feel are very different between them
the aftermath is a lot hotter and has a very aggressive and scratchy picking responsive
the diver has about the same amount of mids and treble (I've made a straight swap), but it's a lot warmer
still crunchy and somewhat aggressive, specially with a booster, but not in a ceramic way
without a booster it's a very soft compared to the aftermath, but still hot and tight for alnico (definitely much hotter and much tighter than the black dog I just installed)
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Never heard or played the Aftermath so I have to refer you to Eric's and Telerocker's posts.

I play kinda mix of Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Metallica, Nickelback, Dream Theatre. Sometimes in D tuning but not lower.

Holy Diver could do all of these, so could the Painkiller - depends if you want more of the classic metal (Priest, Sabbath) or newer stuff (Dream Theater, Metallica).

To be fair, the Crawler has plenty of mids of handles gain well - thats another option.
