PUP Recomendation for 7string Jcustom
« on: April 04, 2011, 07:53:10 AM »
Hey guys,
I'm new to these forums and not to sure how one goes about asking for PUP recommendations.
So I've Included my request in the Jemsite format below:

The Guitar that will be fortunate enough to have BKP's is a 2010 - 7 string Ibanez Jcustom with an African Mahongy Body and maple/walnut neck:

http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/page_jp.php?data_id=108&color=CL01&year=2010&cat_id=1&series_id=241

It will be stringed up with hybrid gauges (ernie ball skinny top, heavy bottom 10/11 mix set + 0.066 for the 7th string ) tuned to standard D - with the 7th string tuned to A.

It currently has PAF-7's which is terrible for high gain metal imo. It's just too compressed, lacks articulate sound and brightness with chords and leads. Also the 7th string sounds like a rubber band moving through mud.

would a matched Aftermath set better suit this guitar?

The Aftermath is known for the very tight bass and fast attack. Designed for heavily detuned guitars. So, your idea is right.

I bought a J Custom 6 String at the end of last year and put an calibrated aftermath set in it - never looked back ;-)

I've got an RG7CT (which is pretty much what you're looking at here without the vine inlays)
I dont' tune it down to A I keep it in standard b , but I recently dropped in a Rebel yell in the bridge and I absolutely love it.
It's not a uber modern sounding pickup (it is not scooped or compressed at all) but my low B stays very tight and articulate and the pickup just sings for playing lead (which is what's important to me)
Nick over at the Axe-Palce described it to me as a "tighter sounding Nailbomb" and that description is
pretty dead on. I don't know what style you play , I play more of a prog/shred type of metal.
No Death or black metal, not very "Djent.y" either .
I have an Aftermath going into my Bernie Rico 7 this weekend so I'll be able to comment on that next week.
I'still a little torn as to whether I'll will like the Aftermath better than a Holydiver in the Rico but I guess I'll find out soon enough. I haven't heard anyone not liking the Aftermath is a 7 yet so I'm hopeful.
BTW this is going thru a Mesa Mark IV-.recto 2X12 cab.
can I be the devil on your shoulder?
