New Pedal Day
« on: April 14, 2011, 10:07:43 PM »
I said I wouldn't get this but I did.
I've joined a new band that requires me to get some gear.
top of the list was a reverb. I went down Denmark Street to test some reverb pedals at the start of the week.
I tried a EH Holy Grail Plus and found it to only really have 1 sweet spot, and that was it.
I tried a EH Holy Stain, that was pretty bad, in fact so bad it got me pretty vexed. The note decay had some bad artifacts in it.
I tried a Wampler Spring Reverb, that was REALLY good and top of the list.
However, the guy in charge of this band opted to go way over budget and get himself a Strymon Bluesky.
Since I heard what it does, I haven't been able to get it out of my head. It was more expensive than the Wampler, but it does a few things besides spring reverb and does them all well.

I had resigned my search to being incomplete, and opted to use a spare holy grail til something better came along, but that hasn't exactly worked out.

Up until now I've never really got excited about pedals. I only used to use a wah and a tuner. Sometimes delay.
Which is why this is so weird for me... this pedal blows my mind! I'm hoping to fit it into some of the hardcore punk stuff I still want to carry on with (the band I was shopping for is not hardcore at all).

here it is. the Strymon BlueSky (excuse my photo booth pic)
Here is a demo of the 'Shimmer' setting

Congrats! I've seen several vids of Strymon Pedals and all impressed me. This Bluesky sounds great. Also the new Timeline.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

the timeline DOES look great.
I hadn't heard of them before I ended up trying stumbling upon this thing.
the shimmer effect is great. It does do normal reverb sounds really well too. can't wait to give it a go tomorrow... LOUD!

Nice!

My favourite reverb right now is the Flickinger Spaghetti Western:

The Spaghetti Western is cool, the Strymon is a different beast.
I'd like a proper reverb tank. That unit, especially when he talks about the 6K6 valve, just makes me think it's going to be close to the Fender 6G15 Unit. Great unit in itself.
One thing I'd possibly consider if I went for something like that is the availability of 6K6 valves. how are they to find?

I'd wager thats a 100% clone of an old Fender 3-knob reverb, not that there is anything wrong with that - they rule.

6K6s are easy enough to find and pretty cheap and if you had half a dozen of them you'd likely have a lifetime supply.  However, you can sub in a 6V6 if you want as well, so no need to worry about valves in this thing.

Every time I see a video of these things I get inspired to make one, but then I realise I never use reverb for gigging and it'd be a pointless waste of money.  Could use it on the one 'slow' song my band does live, but its a bit OTT for a bit reverb on one song.

I want to make one a project too. got some ideas. I'm doing a band that relies on reverb a lot which I why I got the pedal. I'd like a nice tank though.
