Just ordered a pair of Iconix
« on: April 15, 2011, 09:44:18 PM »
$110 USD for the pair. Bridge will be wound 17-18k with a ceramic, the neck a matching wind with an alnico(I left it up to him on which flavor). Double black allen poles. Scatterwound, handwound, best materials available, blah blah blah. I emailed the guy on a whim, told him exactly what I was looking for in detail and he said, "Link me some bands so I know exactly what to do for you." Linked him some Arch Enemy, SepticFlesh and others and he said, "Got it. $110 for the pair." He's been winding for 30 years. I'm hoping he delivers, if not there's a 30 day money back guarantee on them. 2-3 week lead time. I'll get a clip up once they come in. I was almost certain I was going to dig into the BKPs. In the end, I might. We'll see how it goes. Call it an experiment.  :D

 Yeah, people talk about other kinds of pickups all the time on this site (though mostly centered on BKPs as this is the BKP hosted forum). If I don't like them, I'll certainly buy something churned out by Tim and if I do, I'll share that as well, maybe even on the SD or EMG forums. You get what you pay for and I'm testing that fact in public.

so let me get this right....

Its fine for people to talk about other pickups when they are saying how inferior they are

yet if they have something positive or even inquisitive to say its a no go?

bit stupid if you ask me.

i personally replaced my BKP aftermath with a custom ordered pickup from XXXXXX and it works for that guitar so much better in every way and yes its just as tight and more aggressive and has better cleans.

Pickups aren't a marriage contract they are just tools im pretty sure that Tim wont care if people use other pickups as after all we have all made him money by buying his pickups....

And i still have my other guitar with BKPs in

Fair point, we always use other pickups for comparison, to say what we like or don't like about them, or perhaps to recommend a type of pickup BKP don't actually make (Tim has certainly praised EMGs in the forum, I remember).

When it gets to the point of saying "Instead of BKP I bought pickup XX from manufacturer YY and it's perfect", there's absolutely nothing wrong with that viewpoint - but perhaps it's best expressed in a neutral forum, not in BKP's own web space.  It just seems inappropriate.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

See i wasn't trying to cause a ruckus with that i was stating that for the application in the case it worked better but my other guitar is still fully BKP'd as it is a perfect match.

Also just to clarify further i also used pickups from other guitar manufacturers in that particular guitar too i couldnt get anything to work.

Hence why a custom for the specific guitar was neccesary and still took a lot of trial and error

Most of us purchase/own other manufacturers pickups but we don't start threads with an advert for them on Tim's website.

Or a link to "buy now"   :?

The only thing missing here is an "add to cart"  button

It's more of a measuring stick. I'll still go with BKPs in a bit, but for now I can't. I really want to play that wenge Rhoads I built, but my funds are limited. My girlfriend went through bone fusion surgery on her left foot a few months back and BKPs just aren't gonna happen. I've been balancing my mortgage, out of pocket college tuition/books and all the expenses of two people living while she's not earning. I've been starved for gear and it's lookin at me. Empty. Yeah, she's almost better and her family went and ordered another neck for me behind my back, which comes after Summer.

I linked it as a way to gain info on what I'm talking about. Who really thinks a $55 pup is going to compete with BKPs? I mean come on. I would have thought more people would have seen all that and had a chuckle more than anything. I linked some other pups in this section a short while back and noone got riled.

I for one am not riled in the slightest. If Tim's OK with it, I really don't care. It just seemed surprising that a website that Tim is funding should have links to other manufacturers as alternatives to BKP. Conversely, I think his pickups will stand up to comparison with anything else on the market so why should he care. It's not something I'd have done but as the thread is still running I can only assume that the moderators have no problem with it and therefore, neither do I  :D

I must admit discussing other pickups in the pickups forum isnt something I'm clear on. I do think that this in particular shows a lack of courtesy; as dave says, all it was missing was an add to basket button.

As tony says though, we all use other pickups (or a lot of us do at least). I just went back to EMG for 2 of my 4 main guitars, and I dont personally see a reason that discussion of other pickups (their characteristics, not "I just bought some, heres a buy some link!") should be prohibited in general, and there are examples of it in the past. Tims also made it clear that hes unintimidated by other manufacturers (and made it clear that he respects quite a few of them, on this very board too). Its more been a matter of forum tradition.

We kind of act like mates in the pub in here...but its Tims pub and that requires a certain courtesy! You wouldnt go down the Red Lion and start shouting at the bar, landlord in earshot, that you just had 8 pints in the Nags Head, and the beer heres probably better, but more expensive so you arent going to try it for a while, just drink there and hang out here....would you?

Perhaps a mod or BK dude can clarify the matter....I notice Ben (TO/DnL ben, not BK ben) has been and gone since the thread started, so it cant have rustled his feathers)...for future reference?
