Just booked some flights to Romania
« on: April 16, 2011, 02:35:00 AM »
Anybody here been to Romania before? Bucharest is where I'm headed.
I have no idea how to get around as yet, or where I'm going to stay. I'd quite like to see some music.
Any tips?

I've been to Bucharest many times, but I always stay at a girlfriend's apartment.  You can get taxis, which are incredibly cheap, but don't let the guys at the meeting area grab you - they'll rip you off.  If you want to drive then you need to know that there are basically few rules followed.  I've driven there a couple of times (but I've also driven in Rome in the rush hour).  The better hotels aren't really in the centre of town (though there really isn't a centre either as it is a big sprawl).  When are you going as it gets incredibly hot and humid in mid-summer?  You could try hotels.com to see what discounts you can get there.  Just a warning, don't go below 4 star hotels, my friends tell me this.

I can't tell you much about music, as I've never seen any there!

I'm meeting a friend from Baltimore there who will be getting the bus from Istanbul into Bucharest.
I've been reading that the best way to get from OTP airport into the city is to get on the 783 Bus.

I guess we'll use hostel somewhere. I'm kind of worried about it in a way.

Not much to worry about other than the Gypsy kids - watch your pockets, personally I just tell them to f off.   Most people there speak English so language isn't a problem.  I used to go over every couple of months, and I had a cheap mountain bike there that I used to ride around on.  I got to know the embassy and main park area on the OTP side of town really well.  I fact I can find my way around most of that side of town with no problem.  Last time I paid about 40 lei for a taxi from OTP to where I was staying (less than £10).   I've never taken a tram or a bus.

It's an incredibly depressing city if it rains - Ceausescu pulled down a lot of the historical buildings and put up eastern European concrete block flats everywhere.  Budapest is much better - I really like the town there.  Not that there aren't things to see.  It is a city of big contrasts, the poor are really peasants, they walk everywhere and grow their own food.  However the rich there are extremely rich, you will see all the most expensive car makes there.  The food is pretty good, but avoid some of the Romanian specialities like tripe soup - it is sour and nasty.  Lots of Pork there (McDonalds serve a McPork!).  Pizza is good there (many of the chefs are Italian).  If you are near the park, Quattro Stagioni has great food and good views and is between the Arcul De Triumf and Charles De Gaulle plazas at Herastrau park.

Which airline are you taking - if it is Wizz, then pay the extra few quid for the aisle seat.

I'm flying with Tarom?

I've recently gone back to being veggie. I remember finding it not so easy getting veggie food in Serbia when I was there. Dunno how similar Belgrad is to Bucharest though. As far as contrasts go, I've seen similar things before. I'm not that traveled but I've been around a tiny bit.

Is there a proper taxi firm at the airport? I should probably get a new credit card pin too! that would help with cash.

I've been watching some youtube clips for stuff to see. no plans as yet.

You can get veggie, but it is harder - seems like when the population is poorer they eat more meat!  There a re a lot of places that serve Italian food and you can get good salads.  Lots of pizzerias too.

One thing to watch for on the taxis is that they have different rates they charge.  It isn't a scam, they have to show the rate on the outside of the car (watch out for narrow 7's, the regular cabs are between 1.70 & 3.50 leu per km.  The rip off's will charge you 7.50 or more.  Real cabs are yellow and are licensed (an oval number plate).  The official taxi stand at the airport is just outside the arrivals terminal, and they are the most expensive rates.  Depending where you are staying, there is now a train service to the centre of Bucharest too I believe, however there are a lot of rip off cabs at the station you arrive at.

I was reading about the train.
From what I've read, it seems like you need to get a transfer from the Airport to a station where you catch the train into the town, and it works out being quite a bit longer than getting a bus or taxi.

I have no clue where I'm staying yet.
