New Nylon Stringed Acousic Day!

Went to the car boot yesterday and picked up a lovely little acoustic.  Looks old, I'd say somewhere between late 40's to early 60's and it sounds good (considering it only had four badly tuned strings on).

There's no bracing at all on the arched back and there's only three longitudinal braces on the top.  It's in a prety tasteful sunburst and has "Mayfair" stamped on the front of the body and "Foreign" stamped on the back of the headstock.  It also has a tailpiece and a detachable bridge.  If anyone has any info on Mayfair guitars, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know.

Chances are that it's a very cheap rebranded guitar, but it sounds nice and looks prety cool.  Everything looks straight and there's not a lot of evidence of a neck twist or warped top.  I broke out the lighter fluid and tung oil and gave it a bit of a seeing to yesterday, so hopefully I can get some strings on it as soon as possible.

It's like a palour guitar with less of a definced waist.  I'll try to get some photo's up when I can.

She has quite the pretty finish on her!

Yes she does.

There's only two things left to do before I string it up:

1) Work out what to do with the mildew that's on the inside
2) The binding around the soundhole has come loose as it's shrunk over time.  I was seeing if I could pull it off and split it to make it fit again (the split would be hidden under the fretboard), but it's fairly fragile, so I don't think I'll be get it off without breaking it.  At the minute, I'm tempted to leave it.

Sorry about the GIANT pics BTW.

Willing to go get a tech to do it?

I wouldn't have a clue what to do about the mildew. Best of luck.

Not willing to let a tech do anything on any of my guitars

Think I'll see about chemically killing it off, then I might put a fine mist of lacquer inside to cut of any air to any that remains.  Hopefully that'll work.

looks like a winner.

my first ever guitar was a nylon strung acoustic (same for most I expect!) - I still love playing it even today - sounds great for arpeggiated chords - and no hassle, just pick up and play, its fantastic!

I "learnt" to play on a 3/4 size classical.  When I was a teenager, I ended up giving it away to a girl I fancied (sadly, it was about all I gave her) and I've always regretted it.  On the good side though, her sister stole the guitar and learnt to play it and now she's a singer/songwriter, so at least some good has come out of it.

Hopefully I'll be able to pick some strings up over the next couple of days.
