Starting to fall out with my Engl Powerball
« on: April 18, 2011, 12:54:56 PM »
Hi all,

Basically I'm not getting on with my Engl Powerball anymore.  It's an awesome amp and sounds great, but I feel like I need.....I dunno........MORE! lol.

I may look to trade/part ex it for a Mesa Triple Rec (or similar) in the near future - that is, unless I can re-EQ it or find some sort of way of making it less trebly and more beefy.

it may just be the valves I suppose, so I may get a new preamp valve for V1 - but the poweramp valves are a-ok.

what do my fellow powerball owners dial their amps to?

cheers,

Alex

If you want to beef up the ENGL, you may wanna try a subtle boost from something like a Lizard Legs (Flying Dragon), Nick Greer (Sweetback), or Klon (Centaur). All 3 of these boosts add a nice visceral punch to your tone without going overboard.

First stop, of course, should be to revalve the preamp, especially if you use the amp a lot.

Put a graphic EQ in the loop and fine tune it that way - should be able to tweak your amp to taste easy enough like that.

I'd second decent valves as well though and also check the bias - if the amp is running very cold, it will sound weak.

Hey, I'll give it a loving home if you want. Let me take the burden off your hands. Tell you what, I won't even charge, that's how much of a nice guy I am.

I have tungsol 12AX7s and JJ 6L6s in mine, biased by ear to what I thought was a little hot, and was certainly hotter than stock. It sounds like the fist of an angry god.

I was a bit nervous of the bias, but willing to make the sacrifice for the tone, but an amp-savvy mate assures me that the 2 powerballs he's worked on in recently refused to bias above 55% dissipation and they in fact basically cant be biassed hot.

what valves are currently in there??

I find that the JJ ecc83s is great for getting rid of harshness in amps as are the power tubes.

A lot of people describe them as dark but i would say theyre more tamed in the highs than dark

hey all, thanks for the replies.

I have JJs in there atm (both preamp and poweramp).  I have no clue how to bias it, but I may ask the shop next time I go in about biasing it hotter.

I'll try an EQ in the loop - will borrow the other guitarist's EQ if he'll let me (!).  I have a 10 band MXR eq, but it runs on 18v so is a pain in the ass - the only other two pedals I use are a noise suppressor and a tuner (both between the guitar and amp) - so using the MXR in the loop is a pain (two extra cables AND an extra power lead to find a plug for....).

'sounds like the fist of an angry god' - thats what I'm going for, but have yet to get there! will try what has been suggested asap and report back :)

cheers again!

EQ in the FX loop really brings out the aggression in the Powerball. I wouldn't use a Powerball without one.

I did that for years.

Setup is powerball, valved as described, ubercab, sitting on a gramma. Something strange happened today: I, as some of you know, recently got an orange 2x12. As the pic implies my little home studio is REALLY struggling for space, so while trying to find somewhere in the room for it thats sensible and sounds good one of the places I tried was on top of the ubercab. To do this, for stability of the tower on the gramma, I took the wheels off the ubercab. Its always had them on, just makes things less of a pain.

A/Bing ensued. I cant find anywhere in the room thats a permanent location that sounds as good for the 2x12 thats as good as where it was just plonked in the original tests, but when I was testing the ubercab....jesus H bar-stewarding christ. I've had the gramma for about 4 years and appreciated the slight difference, but never been massively impressed with it, but I was absolutely blown away by the difference after resting the cab more fully on it. The low end is denser, tighter, thicker, absolutely incredibly clear, and the amp, recently assisted rather a lot in this regard by the revalve and a hell of a lot by the bias, now has ZERO fizz. None. the amp just grinds away now, plently of top end clarity with no fizz. All the difference being in a trivial change in acoustics/coupling to the environment. How it affected the high end I have no idea I dont want to attempt to get into the theory of it at this instant, but it did change it, a lot.

Whatever cab you have, get a gramma, sit the cab on the gramma so that its fully resting on it, not perched on it with feet or wheels, place it  very carefully in the room (cab location is a really big deal for any tones). Get an EQ as well, but the gramma is cheaper.

Currently kicking myself for not properly exploiting the gramma sooner.

Cab location, room, acoustics in general are a massively overlooked part of tones imo. If youre using this amp in one particular location for the majority of the time, you need to get this sorted out/optimised before anything else. Aside from anything, getting the best cab location you can is free, and makes a massive difference. Then optimise it more with the gramma, then get an EQ.

I dont recommend ODs with powerballs, btw; I dont find that ODs tend to do what they normally do with most engls, because their voicing is already sharp, saturated and tight they can just sound thin, and do very odd and unpleasant things to the pick attack. YMMV, but this is my experience.

the powerball compresses pretty much. i had problems to get decent tones that i likedas i´m more of a marshall-sound-lover. the eq seems like a good option.
best of luck!

Yup

And the 'I did that for years', with the EQ in the loop: I've stopped now. Better valves (or better matched to the amp at least), better bias (to my ears) and carefully placing the cab and isolating it from the room have obviated the need for an EQ for general use/as a 'fix' for the amps tone.

Its a dead certainty that I'll track with EQs again, at some point at least, to fine tune tones, but theres no *need* for them for me with the PB any more. Getting the amp setup well and paying attention to the acoustics of the environment its in > adding more stuff to 'fix' it.

I've got a Powerball too I really recommend getting a JAN Phillips 5751 and putting it in V1 works well in the PI too that really beefed up my powerball and I have JJ's in the rest of the pre amp and power amp.

and +1 on MDV's point of cab positioning. I took the casters out of my cab and it warmed up the tone no end!

I went off the 5751

You just made your room resonate more! (I'm talking about making the room resonate less!)
