Thoughts on old Marshall Purple Cab

Hey guys

Just had an offer on an old Marshall Purple Cab and need some advice!

Bought the new Marshall AFD100 and it arrived yesterday at 5.30 but had to go out for the night and it is still in its box and I am stuck in work so frustrating!!

Anyway I am currently in a Deep Purple tribute band and one of my mates knows someone selling one of their old Marshall 4x12 cabs. I am thinking about getting a new Marshall 1960BV 4x12 Cab with Vintage 30's however this one looks cool as it is purple! lol.

My only concern is its age...it is from 1972 and I am unsure as to whether it would be better to go for a brand new cab as I not sure about the build quality on older units. The asking price is £500 which is about the same price any thoughts?

That's cool - what speakers are in it?  If they're old ones they may be great but they may also be knackered.....

Yeah I like the colour and the retro look of the speaker.

The speakers are greenbacks C -12 he said the code them was CE 21 which doesn't mean much to me to be honest.

I have a cabinet made with parts and have 4 vintage 30's in that so could probably replace them quite easily.

Very nice but I wouldn't pay more than £400 as there are loads are great 70's vintage cabs going for between £250 and £400.

Normally I would say that's not worth £500, but as you are in a Deep Purple tribute act, it probably is worth £500 to you.
 Can you try it? If it sounds good, go for it.

not sure where there are custom-colour chequerboard 4x12 Marshall cabs going for under £500, but in my book that is a bargain.

of course, this assumes the speakers are in good shape.  still, the empty cab is easy worth £200

In retrospect I think you're right and it does look very very tidy. I've never seen those rounded amp pads on the top before though? If the speakers are good it could be worth more looking at what some celestion speakers go for.

If they are original greenbacks from '72 and the tolex is stock, it's a great price. Even if it has been retolexed it is good. You must try the cab and see if all speakers are Ok, also check inside if they are all the same, if both positive, go for it. I got a '73 Marshall straight with original greybacks (greenbacks but they didn't have the colored plastic at that time) and it sounds so good!!!!

to give an idea of age, you generally find greenbacks up to '73, then creambacks from '73, greybacks from '75, then blackbacks from '77.

the only difference is the colour of the magnet cover with the G12Ms, however the G12H's changed to a different voice coil when the blackbacks were bought in and they are MUCH brighter and unforgiving - a 'crisp' sound that suits more gain than classic rock.

speakers, unless destroyed, only get better with age.  Cabinets, unless destroyed, only look cooler with age. Whenever considering vintage vs new for same price? go with vintage!  :D

a used regular 1960 lead with g12t75's here is about £1000 (bloody brazil)  :x
paid almost £800 for mine, so I'd say £500 for a rare looking vintage cab isn't bad at all, even for british standards, although you could buy a "generic" one for much less

its a '68 cab mate, he says he bought it in 1988, so it was 20 years old already when he bought it.

these old basketweave cabs attract STUPID amounts of money.

oh, and the metal handles sound better than the later plastic ones  :roll:

Actually when I play my 73 cab with loads of bass I get rattling/farting from the plastic handles. So I indeed do consider getting some metal ones from scumback http://scumbackspeakers.com/handles.html

So is that actually cheap for that? I would have thought it was a bit of a triggers broom.
