Bone vs celluloid pick -- the audio clip

Well, here it is, and the proof is in the pudding, as they say.

I must admit, I didn't think the tonal difference would translate into audio, but I was wrong -- it's clearly definable!

The beginning of the clip is a comparison between celluloid and bone. Listen to the clip, pick a favourite, and then I'll clue you in as to which is which. The rest of the clip is a pickup/riff test, feel free to skip it.

Ok, great. Now I am only talking about the one part played 3 times at the very beginning. Right now I had several beers and donīt have my studio headphones on so I might revise this tomorrow, but here is my first impression.
To me the first one sounds most lively / organic, with nice attack and propper bottom. My favorite. I guess this is bone.
Second one seems duller, mushier, flatter. Least favorite.
Third one seems brightest, hollowest and most agressive. Itīs ok, but I donīt really like it.

So in this clip I prefer the first one. Just seems balanced and nice.

PS: Iīm thinking about doing a similar thing comparing my pics which would be classic Jazz III, Ultex Jazz III and V-Picks (small pointed) with each other. Might be interesting as well, though I might wait for my bone and wood picks which are stuck in Jamaica, NY). More soon ;)

Go ahead, they have been sitting there since the 19th waiting to be brought to Germany.^^ And USPS is supposed to be one of the faster services...pfff.

And while we are at the topic of celluloid vs bone, could you perhaps post something more about the feel of them, without compromising the guessing by mentioning tone of course. Maybe you noticed a difference in how you play? How hard you strike the strings?
I think any difference you noticed at all would be interresting to most of us.

i hear the same as Kiichi

1 = Nice balance  (Bone)
2 = Dull sounding (celluloid)
3 = Bright and somewhat thin (thinner celluloid)

Thanks mate. You even specified my guesses a bit further.
Now Iīll go even further, thanks ethanol, and say that 2 was like the classic black big Dunlop Jazz III pic and 3 was nylon and about .68mm thick.^^

This is gun....damn you ethanol, I mean fun!

how thick and what shape was the celluloid?

If that is so, the contrast might have thown me off, leading me to hear the 3rd one brighter than it is. I just played the two A things back to back and they seem similar, althoug I think now completly the same, might just be playing though. I still think they are better than the second though, but I have to say that different media players also seem to make a difference in this comparison, as the differences seem clearer in media player classic than in VLC.

A is the bone pick, much harder, B is the celluloid... harder picking on the 3rd run through, though :)

the 3rd one still sounds the brightest to me...must be the harder picking as mentioned above..

Yes, A is the bone pick. B is a Fender heavy Premium Celluloid.

theres clear differences in tone, but I guess differences in picking technique may be making a differences too. I hear B as being a little more dull.
