High powered Greenback options?
« on: April 28, 2011, 10:15:14 AM »
Hi Guys lets talk speakers!!

I have a pair of Celestion Golds in my 2x12 which are really really nice. I am looking to load another 2x12 with something that is still smooth and warm but with a tighter low end and a crunchier tone.

I thought that a greenback type speaker might bet me there but the 25w rating is just no good - I need 30w minimum really. I have thought about the G12h but it appears that that speaker wont give me the mids. I have also looked at the G12-65 heritage which looks on paper ideal but opinions seem quite divided.

Open to look at anything! - any advice??

Cheers

Matt

maybe a Tayden Great Brit at 50watts?
I think that has a G12H style magnet and but a higher power rated voice coil.
I've played one mixed with a different Tayden in a 2x12. that cab sounded really nice.

the G12H will give you all the mids you want - its very midrangey imo, that why I like it.  it's just a G12M 'greenback' with a heavier magnet; hence tighter bass and snarlier mids.

you'd do well with the G12-65 as well, or the classic lead 80 with the former being crunchier and the latter being fatter with more bass.

G12H is middy, but has a midscoop gap at some very audible frequency, and also a lot more bass and a more aggressive top
very different from a G12M

maybe a weber 50w ceramic silver bell or a scumback 65w M75?
eminence makes some cheaper ones like the private jack and the GB12, but they don't sound like celestions at all

I had a quad of the regular G12M's, pair of 70's rola G12M with 55 hz bass cones and five V30's... also the neodymium version of the v30, which was actually pretty good, although somehow unique sounding

right now I have a pair of scumback H75's, which is still pretty close to a regular celestion G12H, but a bit middier and rounder, and some boutique MG music Black Dog speakers
the MG Black Dog is supposedly a G12M clone, but it doesn't sound like one
mine is 50w, and the magnet and casing are the same used by Weber on the Silver Bell
paper layered bobbins and the same cone as the G12M, but it's much fatter and louder than a G12M and has a rounder and cleaner top
I love these speakers and they are very easy to deal for every situation (home, band practice, gigs, and specially recordings), BUT they won't deliver the aggressive celestion snarl

if you can find the G12-65 for cheap, go for it, but if you can only find the heritage expensive version, get a scumback M75 instead

Scumback M75 high wattage.

+1, go for the 60W version, it's very popular.

Shipping is gonna hurt in UK, but from clips and reviews of professional players I would say they are truly awesome.

I'm am very surprised nobody has mentioned Eminence. The Private Jack is based on the Greenback and manages 50 Watts.

Otherwise the Wizard is the heavier version, sounding more like the H30.

What amp ?

It will be  for my existing MJW Orion (jtm45/plexi like) and for my new Orion which will be the same but with el34s and with a foot heavily in the Superlead camp. The idea is that I can have two cabs that are interchangeable for different tones with the two amps. I love the golds but find that they are quite a clean speaker and the extra warmth you get from them is not ideal with a jtm45 syle amp with kt66s as it is already a warm bass heavy amp.

Cheers

Matt

i had one of these for a while, but it didn't suit my style. the build quality was impeccable though, and i sold it to my boss in fact, who is very happy with it, and i must admit it suits his rig and playing very well

I recently got a pair of Tone Tubby ceramic hempcones (40w each), and I really like them.  I replaced my Sidewinders in my 2x12 Ear Candy cab with them (I'm not getting rid of the Sidewinders though!).  I really like the sound of them, they are very much like a G12M and have a sweet but detailed top with nice control in the mids and bass.

I have a set of Scumbacks - LHDC M75's, but am not happy with them and I'm getting them reconed by Weber.  I would recommend the Weber Thames or ceramic Silver Dog, if you want a more open sounding speaker.
