i just got a set of transformers + choke through that cost £301 from the US that was marked at full value with no duty just £23 VAT & handling

a package i got a few months back that was of £90 value i got hit with a £30 duty charge then vat & handling.

Guess it depends entirely on the mood of whoever processes it on the day it gets in

If it's a mistake, I write to Customs and claim back the VAT, but trying to get the admin fee back from Royal Mail is more trouble than it's worth.

I agree entirely. Royal mail aren't worth the effort unless its a massive amount of money. I generally try to avoid them where possible

Not that I'm suggesting it's a good idea, but if you get it shipped as a present (purchased in the US) then I don't think they can apply the taxes.

Saying that though, the tax man is the last person you want on your back.

oh yeah, you reminded me, there's also the postage from customs to me :D which can be quite a lot
