YC/DC? are playing in Castleford on Sunday night :0)
« on: May 06, 2011, 02:35:40 PM »
Yep, the mighty YC/DC? (www.ycdc.co.uk) will be having a run out from the Manchester area and gigging in The Lion, Castleford on Sunday night:  www.thelioncastleford.co.uk

The website's a bit out of date but we're scheduled to start @ 8pm, and I'm assuming there's a 10:30pm curfew on a Sunday.  We'll be doing two sets, our second gig with our new singer.

If anyone's in the area and wants to bob along it'd be good to see you.  Come up and say hello if you do  :D

Do ppl show up for gigs on Sunday nights in England? Unless we were playing with a major headline draw, it would be a dismal show here ...

How are you getting on with the Emeralds?

I've noticed at most small band gigs (original material) most nights are bad turnouts unless they are with a well known local headliner.

Cover bands are generally a different thing they always seem to have great turnouts

Only played one Sunday night gig before, andthe place was empty   I'll let you know how this one goes on Monday.

The Emeralds I'm really liking  :)  They're superb in a live mix where they sit just right.  I'd like to try them in a more balanced guitar at some point, the McKorina is very midrange-y so you lose some of the dynamics that they probably have.

Interesting!  So do you think they'd maybe be slightly better suited to an LP type?

I know you've had several sets of BKPs in korina guitars now, which do you reckon work best?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Korina is a funny wood, and it seems to take the middle of the tonal spectrum.  If a good Les Paul covers the EQ range of 1-5, an all Korina V or McCarty would cover the range 2-4.  Korina seems to lose the very bottom and very top end, but has a real sweetness to the whole range it does have.

Based on that, I reckon vintage-y PAFs are the best option for all round tones.  Riff Raffs and VHIIs are probably what most people would like, and I reckon they're the best choice for korina Vs too.  The Emeralds are probably a tiny bit too smooth for the majority of people's tatses, but I really like that singing sweetness my McKorina has as I don't like too hard a top end 'bite'  :)

Good description of the korina tone, I can see what you're getting at!   It's not a million miles from mahogany, but mahogany guitars are capable of being a bit boomy or conversely a bit thin in the treble, korina doesn't seem to do that.

I seem to recall Hunter describing the Emerald bridge as quite bitey when he had it in his Edwards LP (or was it his McCarty Rosewood?), so it sounds like the korina is "rounding the edges" a little.  I quite like the sound of that.

Yep, that's exactly what's doing Phil.  It works really well.

Shame you're not more local, you could have tried them out  :)

Well it's Monday, I've been in work since 8am and I'm knackered

The pub was fairly small and was about half full.  I'm guessing 40ish people?  Had a pretty good gig as it was fun, but after petrol/soft drinks/chips I had a fiver in my pocket  :(  Not exactly a money spinner, so I won't give up my day job!
