There's a few of those Hughes & Kettner amps I like the look of but their limitation is that they don't come up on Ebay anything like as frequently as JVMs.

Actually, a while ago I toyed with the idea of finding a JMP-1 to use as a preamp and then some sort of valve power amp such as anu Valve amp or a Marshall 50/50. The problem was that a number of people told me that there just wasn't enough gain on tap for what I wanted as I go up to Metallica/Disturbed levels, though I suppose pedals would help. I really don't know anything about this kind of setup at all. I know I'd need the JMP and I know I'd need a power amp. I'm guessing I could use anything as a power amp and I already have a cabinet. How do pedals connect to this sort of setup? If I went JMP and a rack mounted power amp, presumably I'd need somewhere to mount them so what do I look for and what do they cost? Is there anything else I'd need to consider?

I think Eric was referring to a 70s JMP head, not the JMP1 preamp.

I had a JMP1 for a few years and I don't think you'd have any issues gainwise from the bands you mentioned. I always had an issue with the JMP1 sounding a bit too scooped for my tastes, but I guess with an external EQ etc that could be remedied.

i've had loads of Laney's x3 GH50's, x2 VC30's, LC15, Chrome-o-zone, LC15R, VH100R, and  a Pro-Tube AOR100. I've also had a DSL50, DSL401 and a TSL601.

I always sold the Laneys to fund the next amp etc, but always ended up coming back to them. Especially the GH50, such a great sounding amp, and in my opinion what a DSL SHOULD sound like, instead of the thin fizzy sound that is modern Marshall.

The VH100r is a good amp, if you need all those options of twin channels each with switchable gain, 3 fx loops etc. It's blistering loud as well. Very rarely did i get it past 1.5 on the volume, i only get the GH up to 4! I used to have to fun my TSL master flat out, weird. I prefer the GH running EL34, all of mine came with 6L6. Also the Bias switch is only a rough guide, my local tech adjusted the bias properly internally other wise it would be quite under biased with EL34's onthe EL34 bias setting.

And reliability, none of my Laneys have EVER gone wrong. Maybe i was unlucky but All of the Marshalls failed on me, more than once.

They are, but with a decent valve power amp they can still get nice tones out of them.

I had mine with an EL84 20w a side Marshall power amp and it was a really nice clean sound.

I found the EL84s to not be what I wanted when it came to the OD tones of the JMP1, for for clean and crunch it was good.

I've had an LC-50 and, more recently, a VC30 2x12. Both were cracking amps, for different jobs. The LC50 nailed the eighties Marshall thing for me, bang on. The Vc30 has one of the sweetest clean tones available anywhere below the "stupid money" level of things. The drive is admittedly not as good, but it's not really a hard rock amp. That being said, with the all stops pulled out, a good treble booster, a 1x15 extension cabinet and a set of BK's finest p-90's, It could kick out Stoner tone to die for.

The HH speaqkers are a bit pony, though, but complaining any factory amp has less than great speakers is kind of redundant.
