Wiring problem with Tele(moved)
« on: May 10, 2011, 02:30:51 PM »
Hi there  (I posted this in the wrong forum so hopefully someone here can help out)

I'm a first time poster on the forum but have been lurking for a little while.  I thought I'd sign up as I've found myself in a bit of trouble with some wiring.

I recently bought a new Boss set bridge pickup for my Telecaster to go with the Mississippi Queen P90 I have in the neck position.  Last night I wired in the bridge all good and proper but when I came to try out the middle position I was getting a very hollow tone from the pickups(or 'quacky' as some people like to describe it) so I'm figuring that the pickups are out of phase.  I reversed the wires on the bridge pickup so that they were going to the opposite solder points as I'd read somewhere that doing this can remedy the problem.  I found that it just cancelled out the bridge pup altogether!

So.....  I am wondering whether it is worth trying the same method with the P90?  by reversing the wires? Could this work?

I know some people like the out of phase sound you can get but it's really not to my tastes.

It might be worth noting that I have it wired with a 4-way switch.  I also have a ground wire going from the volume pot to the back of the bridge plate(I had to do this as the last pickup I had was pretty noisy!)

Any help would be great!
Thanks!

Welcome aboard!  :D

Does the MQ have a single-conductor cable with a braided outer shield, or does it have black and white wires plus a bare shield wire?

If it's the former, don't try reversing the wires because it will connect the pickup cover to the "hot" side of the circuit.  If it's the latter, then swapping the black and white wires will reverse the phase.

On the bridge pickup, it probably "died" because the ground wire was also connected to the metal baseplate, so swapping the wires has shorted the whole pickup to ground.  Here's how to fix it:

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

@Simon: don't do this on your Boss, it would void the warranty. Better to contact Tim directly and see what he can do for you.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Hey,

Thanks for the replies!

I had an email from Tim explaining that I should try reversing the wires on the P90 instead, to see if that fixed the issue and it has.

It's all a great learning curve I guess.  Even if it's a tad frustrating at first!

Thanks again for your help :)
