Do I buy a new guitar?
« on: May 15, 2011, 08:20:53 PM »
Probably a silly question to ask on a guitar forum :D

I have 2 guitars at the mo (worth playing anyway, some plywood monstrosities locked in a cupboard but we ignore them), my ibanez with bareknuckles and my epi LP. when i recently got my LP i thought, great, this can be my backupp and ill keep it at home for recording etc. well, now this guitar is my backup now for live shows (it made its debut last week, aww) and as my guitars are kept at our recording location, i dont have a guitar to use at home!

I am looking for something cheap, yet will sound nice on recordings and feel decent to play. Yet, not so cheap that in the back of my mind ill want to replace it in the near future. It would be preferable if I could also rely on it in live situations if i have a problem with my other gear. My LP was a steal on ebay for 180 quid new, so something lik this would be perfect! lend me your recommendations

You could get a cheap Ibbie? Some of the earlier GIOs were pretty good

Very good suggestion. Also worth trying are the Squier Classic Vibes. Those don't have humbuckers though if that's a necessity.

I would've suggested a Classic Vibe too. HB-wise Epi LP specials play very nicely for very little £'s. There's always Vintage in the bang for buck mix.

cheers for the recommendations guys. keep em coming!

im more of a humbucker kinda guy, but the thought of a strat is quite appealing. Is there a model I could get with a humbucker bridge for under 400? the main thing that puts me off strats is the bridge feels too sharp against my hand when i play, but im sure theres alternatives.

maybe im just being greedy, do i neeeed a 3rd guitar... ;)

I would certainly recommend you to try a Squier CV Tele. Every guitarist (except Roo) needs a Tele.

Or how about this?

If £400 is your limit then the world is your oyster. Squier John5 Tele? The new Sterling AX30 looks nice and should come in at about that (basically an Axis Supersport).
Michael Kelly Patriot Black.
 Hagstrom Ultra Swede.
 LTD ST-203FR.
Ibanez RG350.
Coda have a secondhand Sterling JP50 for £350, and there are tons of decent secondhand guitars on ebay for that kind of money.
Cold Sweat, Nailbomb 7b, Cold Sweat 7n

if you do want something more stratty, you can pick up a new (probably more like NOS) MIJ tokai gs100 for under £400... i'd be taking that over a squier or anything like that, no question, based on the other MIJ tokais I've tried (haven't tried the gs100).

I'm highly biased on these matters but for £400, you could have nice early Patrick Eggle.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

I bet he's got one really and won't admit it
