7 String, Best Set of BKs?
« on: May 26, 2011, 02:16:30 AM »
I have a custom self-built mahogany 7 string w/ maple cap and birds eye maple neck. I play mostly progressive rock, metal, progressive metal, melodic metal, nothing like doom metal or stuff like that. I love the tones of Satch and Petrucci, and I want pickups that can deliver a nice harsh, aggressive, rhythm tone but also a sweet lead/solo tone with lots of "oomph".

Any suggestions?

Would said nailbomb be good for a tight and aggressive tone?

the nailbomb is "fairly" tight.
it is pretty aggresive but still retian a very good lead tone.
Aftermath and Rebel Yell are both tighter and both different "flavors" of what you can get from a Nailbomb.
NB is most versatile of the bunch IMO.
can I be the devil on your shoulder?

So a Nailbomb for the bridge! How about a Cold Sweat or a Holy Diver for the neck?

I haven't tried it myself, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt, but the VHII is said to sound wonderful on a mahogany body, and pairs well with a Nailbomb. I'm considering this same combo for my Bernie Rico jr.

Sooo much to take into consideration, this really is quite hard lol. I heard the vhII is more classic rock orientated though, hmm.

Perhaps, in summation:

Is that what you're looking for?  I thought this tone sounded awesome, though I can't quite tell if that's the neck (VHII) or the bridge (RY)...
