Best bridge humbucker w/ 250k pots?
« on: May 26, 2011, 06:59:07 AM »
I'm looking to throw a new set of BKPs into my Godin Velocity HSS, I'm going with Slowhands in the neck and middle (baseplate on the neck pup)

I'm going to keep 250k pots all around, I know Tim says that he likes 500k pots with HSS setups but I just don't like single coils with high value pots, they sound too glassy and thin.  So I am trying to decide which BKP will sound best with a 250k volume pot.

I want this guitar to be versatile.  I will use it for mostly bluesy stuff, I want the bridge to sound smooth and articulate with lots of harmonics and a squishy attack (that last bit is important, I don't want anything with too sharp an attack, I like a really "chewy" sound).  I don't want anything too vintage, but nothing too contemporary either, just a good middle of the road, versatile pickup.  Tonewise I'm going for something like Joe Bonamossa, Andy Timmons, Jeff Healey, Satriani...kinda bluesy highish gain stuff.  I'm thinking about the VHII, Abraxas or Rebel Yell but obviously I'm open to suggestions.

So what do you think?

All of your choices would make sense. To me the decisive question is whether or not you intend to split the bridge pickup when selected together with the middle pickup. Split = Abraxas or Rebel Yell, not split = VHII.

Cheers Stephan

Try a Mule in there, should work pretty well for everything mentioned

My Crawler works nice in an HSS-swampashstrat at 250K.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I find humbuckers tend to sound brighter than I'd like in Strat-type guitars anyway, so whatever the pickup I might try it with 250k first.

Alternatively, you could wire it so the humbucker "sees" a 500k pot and the single-coils "see" a 250k.  Have a look at this thread:

^ +1, OR try a 300k pot as a middle ground - Gibson have been fitting 300k pots for years (I've changed plenty of them out for 500k pots, even Custom Shop stuff).
