New guitar for metal?
« on: May 26, 2011, 09:42:36 PM »
I've always played ss Teles and I love em, but now I'm moving towards more heavy metal and need a guitar with high output pups and a trem system, and preferably not some "fancy modern superstrat emg loaded pointy thing"
Any tele models which are good for metal but look old school ie single coil pups and tele bridge/ bigsby?
Or any recommendations for good partscaster ideas, (remembering that it cant look out of place in '52)

If you can stand the looks, then maybe a b.c rich.
I love the warlock shape due to it being perfect for the way i play which is the classic stance, 45 degrees.

Maybe a Mockingbird or a bich xD

None of these guitars are too expensive either :)

The only way you're going to get that is by putting hot pickups in an actual Tele, isn't it?  :?

John 5 model, maybe?  Looks modern but still has a vintage vibe.

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

It's a fixed bridge rather than a trem, but maybe the Jim Root (from Slipknot/Stone Sour) sig Tele would be worth a look? Tele body/headstock shape, but a mahogany body, EMGs and jumbo frets. Alternatively, doing something along similar lines but made from bits may work out cheaper/have fewer associations with a band you perhaps aren't keen on.

It's probably Warmoth or some decently priced local luthier that will be your best bet for exactly what you are looking for. You get to choose the woods, the finish, all of it. Go play some somewhat similarly shaped guitars(not V's) and get a feel for what neck and body contributions you're looking for or start with the pickups you are aiming to get and work the rest in. I know forum member Wez could do whatever you want, have the experience to help you with options and you'd be able to have whatever neck joint you'd like instead of being limited to bolt on.

+1 on that John 5 model.
Listen to his stuff, now that is nice dark metal, but, just as he is, very versatile as well.  Even the stock PUs are supposed to be great, very dark. And it look vintage ´nough, or will with some nice BKPs....
At least that´s what I think.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

(self imposed spam thread hijack) I have a Peavey Wolfgang special for sale at the moment. It would cover the trem angle as it has a floyd with Drop-D tuna, 2 humbuckers & is vaguely tele shaped.....very vaguely

Oops i read your post wrong :P

But if i were you, then i would make a parts caster from warmoth. A mahogany body with a single vol, humbucker and recessed floyd routing costs 395$
And a maple neck with ebony fretboard is around 400 too.. Not too bad for a badass guitar.

go into body builder and neck builder and run amok :)

This one got a great review in Guitarist, it also has good looks, not too far from Teles.

Alternatively, you could get the Fender Blacktop Tele.

In both cases it would be a lot cheaper than the John5 Teles and you can then just put Bareknuckles in them without having to change pots from the EMG hardware.

Finally they make one with a trem too, if you really need that (the classic player Tele).

Yeah, agree the Jim Root ones look great. Not so keen on the control layout myself, but should appeal to a lot of people used to a more super-stratty layout.

One thing to note though: the JR Tele I tried looked like the bridge wasn't on straight – might be a QC red flag…

If it wasn't for the skinny neck* even I would buy a Jim Root Tele.  Very cool design.

In my opinion a tele for metal is just a no go both soundwise and imagewise its just wrong.

And before anyone posts pics of Hetfield with a tele that was on a rock album :P

So yeah anything but a tele for metal!
