Another request for help choosing pickups!
« on: June 03, 2011, 08:42:38 AM »
Hey All,

I'm about to shop for my first set of BKPs, and I'd like some advice.

The guitar I'm buying them for is a through neck Ibanez RG with a mahogany body. I play tech-metal (think Sikth and DEP) so would be looking for lots of clarity and string definition on the upper 4 strings coupled with a good wedge of djent on the lower 2 strings from the bridge pickup. For the neck pickup I'd like a smooth fat buttery lead tone for well, wanking. ;)

I was thinking Painkiller bridge and Cold Sweat neck am I on the right track here? Any other options I should consider?

Cheers!

You should also look at the aftermath. BKP's tightest and Djentiest pickup.
Can't help you on the neck pickup though, other than to say if you do wanky solos on stage, please use some mids! I find solos mostly very boring anyway, but loads of people seem to scoop their sound so much that it doesn't cut through the mix in the band setting.

Cheers for the suggestion chap, I'll check out the Aftermath. :)

I'm totally with you on the scooping thing, I tend to prefer a mid-heavy tone and find it annoying when I watch a band and the guitars aren't cutting through at all because of their scooped tones.

Good lad :)

When playing the guitar on its own in the bedroom or band room, the scooped sound often sounds really really heavy and brutal, but a lot of people don't seem to understand how the guitar sits in the mix!
