50's style wiring

What do people mean when they say to get 50's style wiring? Are they refering to the pickups, caps, pots, or what? Is the difference of 50's style wiring really that dramatic?

in les pauls that have the tone cap between the vol pot and the tone pot (rather than fastened to the back of the tone pot) its basically whether you solder the cap to the input or the output of the volume pot.
