Output Values
« on: June 08, 2011, 09:38:09 AM »
Hey guys was just wondering how much output values relate to actual gain?

I know this must seem like a daft question for those that know the answer lol but it has been making me wonder.

For example the Black Dog is 9.4K
The Holy Diver is 15.9K
and the Warpig is 21.5K

Does this mean that with the same amp settings the Holy Diver will push the amp one and a half times as hard and therefore create a more distorted sound. Consequently will the Warpig push the amp twice as hard.

Just been wondering as I am considering putting Holydivers into my PRS Custom 22 as I want a really high gain thick lead sound with huge sustain and the ability to legato all over the place.

The one thing I have found is that with low gain, legato becomes incredibly difficult for me... a good example is that if I run an overdrive pedal through my amp I get the light crunch sound...which is good for blues but no good really for soloing.

If I kick in my Boss Metal Zone pedal (which to be honest I don't really like anymore as it is very sterile sounding) soloing becomes a breeze! Harmonics jump off the fretboard I can legato and tap with one hand behind my back and solos sound massive.

I am currently playing through a Marshall AFD100 which is a great amp however on my PRS I would like more of that Boss Metal Zone sound without using the pedal lol but using the amps and pickups if that makes sense.

Therefore the question is whether the Holy Divers would attain this (the neck pickup seems very low at 7.7K) or should I look at the Miracle Man set or Ceramic Warpigs?

Very confused at the moment and would be very grateful if someone could sort this out for me.

I will be playing hard rock classics ie Zep, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Whitesnake, Malmsteen etc but I want a much more modern vibe to the solos!

Many Many Thanks for your time!

DC resistance is not output

you'll be fine with the diver in the bridge position
it's much superior to the PRS dragon II, but I'm not sure I'd say it's noticeably hotter, despite of the higher DC resistance
it's definitely thicker, clearer and punchier, though
for the neck, try the cold sweat

a double alnico miracle man set could be interesting too
it's even fatter and more compressed than the diver, with a darker and smoother top
tons of sustain

and get rid of the metal zone then buy a boss sd-1, wylde overdrive or a tube screamer to boost the solos
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Thanks for the quick response...you don't think the Ceramic Warpig would be an option then.

You are right about the Metal Zone lol I just used it as an example, it can be a lot of fun but it is awful!

I have a Ibanez Jemini that I bought a while back that I don't really use not sure if you are aware of it but one side is based on an Ibanez TS-9 and the other is a Boss DS-1.

Never really used it as at the time was using modelers. Perhaps that would be a good boost through the amp?

Really looking for examples of what each of these pickups would give voicing wise...I really like Doug Aldrich's tone really high gain rock dont know if you have listened to the new Whitesnake album "Forrevermore", in my opinion it is one of the best Rock albums in years! I prefer it to 1987. Satriani Springs to mind as well in terms of distortion and sustain.

First of all, as Eric said, any BKP will improve the tone of the PRS compared to the stock Dragon IIs.

Normally I would have recommended a Holydiver bridge and a Cold Sweat neck for 80s tones - that's what I use in my PRS Custom. However, since you have a pedal at hand with a TS-9 like circuitry you could use this as a treble/midboost for your solos. A good complimentary pickup to that would be one that is not quite as mid heavy. So you should look at the Miracle Man set.
