Blocking the top vents of an amp head?

Hi guys.

Is it ok for an amp to have it's top vents blocked (in this case by a rack case ontop of the amp) aslong as the back of the amp is open and ventilated?

I would consider putting the rack case underneath the amp head but the top of my cab has a handle on it so it isn't flat enough to put the rack case on without it wobbling around and I don't want to risk my amp falling off  :lol:

I've been doing this for over a year now with no heat problems. I'm in the same boat as you with the handles being in the way. Lot's of amp head/rack cases don't have much in the way of ventilation through the top, but some do have a bit and some also have fans. I say go for it as is and if you get worried, turn on an overhead fan or set one up at least a good distance from the setup. Wouldn't want that motor's magnetic field giving you issues. You could also buy some really big feet for the rack or cut some scr@ps of wood and paint them black to go between the head and the rack.

I've made some wood blocks up to put under the rack ontop of the amp but due to the shape of the rack it was never very sturdy.

I'll either try them between the cab and the head or just take the top handle of the cab off.

Taking the top handle off of a sealed cab will result in a distinct tonal change. If it's an open-back then I wouldn't worry so much. I did try taking handles off of things and, from the bottom up, it was cab, rack and then the head. Most heads weigh more than racks and it was a wobbly son of a 13itch. Felt wrong. Maybe you just need to invest in a small table or a jet pack-like propulsion system to float your rack.
