Haven't we had this discussion before?
There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary.
Those who do and those who do not.

Having said that, I wouldn't have a clue how to "define" it,

From what i have heard which admittedly isnt much

the terribly trebley & shrill overly distorted & lacking in bass & mids guitar tone is how i would define it.

but as i said i havent heard much but everything i have heard had that same tone that wasnt pleasant on the ears

It's atmosphere that defines it more than anything. Some REALLY musically disparate stuff all falls under black metal.

But we digress.

Here are a couple corkers from around the UK.

Im just listening to the first one currently

it started off so well but has just gone very naff mainly due to the very uninspired drumming and that ascending/descending lick

other than that i could actually listen this.

The tone isnt destroying my ear drums either but still isnt to my taste.
Other than the lead tone i quite enjoyed that.

and towards the end it just sounds like the drummer is having an epileptic fit.

The worst part for me was the drums by far.. usually its the vocals on this sorta stuff.

Now onto the second

actually no i cant listen this one the drumming is too bad

I think i will stick to necrophagist for my bad vocals band!

Holy shite, those are incomprehensible.

I thought the first one said "Incested".  Second one, no idea.

Is the third one "Tormentum"?

Please enter the text above to validate your regestration

In twenty years time when bot pattern recognition is better than human, no one will register anywhere

Though there arent any letters or words or anything in that. Apparently it says Crepitation. There is no C, r, e, p, i, t, a, o or n in it, no matter what anyone says.

Edit - ingested and detrimentum I can see, I think, now that I know thats apparently what they are.

Crepitation are one of the willfully ultra-underground bands (to the point one of them lambasts my festival for booking "mainstream" acts (like Carcass) so the whole point is that it's illegible and people think it's absurd and are put off.

They aren't very good, either. But a couple of the guys that have been in them have been in decent enough bands.

Funnily enough, these slam death bands with preposterous logos are some of the types of bands you could probably do well for yourself recording, Mark.

Its all a matter of taste :P Necrophagist does not do me any good. Its too sterile :P

For me its just an impressive feat to be that tight.

I personally dislike the music other than the solo sections where it becomes 'normal music'

I cant get my head around that. It all seems to be a little game to distinguish the true hardcore elite from the mainstream fakes by seeing if they know what the logo says, all in the name of having fewer fans. Nothing wrong with having fans, surely?

And I'd like to record em too. My current project is rock and my next several are acoustic/solo singery stuffs; at this rate, aside from it looking like I'll be mixing a certain mutual friend/online aquantances band (that shall remain nameless publically till its certain; just seems crass to blab), which I'm very much looking forward to, if I want to do any metal I'm gonna have to play it
